I know some insurers will let you use your car NCB when opening a policy, but does anyone know if you make a claim on that policy, will it effect your car's NCB?

Using the car's NCB will save me a bundle but I don't want to lose it if my bike gets nicked!!

Any info would be greatly received... Thumbs Up

Hi tipster

If you use your car NCD on the bike, you are transferring that no claims bonus to the bike and you won't be able to use it again on the car.

Each individual policy builds up no claims bonus on that contract. I have never seen a no claim bonus wording which says it will take away the bonus if a claim is made on any other policy.

Most insurance companies will alow you to protect your NCB for a small fee.

Ask them about it.

You can only normally get protected on claims once you've got over a certain amount of no claims, like about 3 years. Worth doing once you have the option, as you can claim normally twice in a year and still keep yoru NCB. Smile Thumbs Up

Fat controller; I guessed that would be the case, but how would these companies know that I'm using my Car's NCB on the bike policy. As far as I'm aware, the NCB just gets you a discount, it isn't really put on any kind of credit search or anything?

Don't be silly. As far as insurance is concerned, bikes and cars are completely seperate, apart from the claims and convictions. They won't be too happy when they ask you to provide proof of no claims and you send them the old policy for the other type of vehicle! Smile

Remember kids, bikes aren't like lego. You can't easily take a part from one bike and then fit it to another.

Hi

Some companies have been known to allow you transfer no claims from a bike to a car, and the other way round. However they are not going to let you share it.

All the best

Marjay

I was working on the assumption that tipster had got a deal which allowed him to use his car bonus. Norwich Union allow bikers to do that on some schemes for new bikers or scooter riders.

You are right to say what you did. If the deal did not allow car bonus to be used then you won't get it. The insurers look for proof of the original no claims bonus and it usually has details like the make and model on it. If it doesn't then insurers will ring the other company to check it out.
