Hello there BCF! I've been lurking the forum for a while now, browsing through all of the projects some of you have been working on and I'm very impressed!

However, reading through so much about mechanics and engineering has inspired me to get a cheap 125 which is for spares or repair that I could fix up.

Here's my situation. I started riding a 50cc Yamaha Aerox at 16 and I still have it now, I didn't get a 125 at 17 because I went for my car test which I passed last month. I also had to do my CBT again a few months ago because it expired so I thought I'd make use of it.

The thing is, I have some cash saved for a car - only about £350 - and selling my moped was going to go towards it also but due to insurance I don't think I'll be able to afford running a car any time soon.

I live in Bristol and the only spares/repairs bikes I've found so far is:
A Mito 525 which I would like to have but I know how unreliable they are.
An SR125 which would be a nice ride but I would like to go faster than 60mph.
A GZ125 which would also be too sluggish.

I've been trying to find a tzr125 or rz125 locally but there's nothing. Preferably I'd want a Yamaha 2 stroke with a power valve because I can get a discount on the parts.

I'm relatively experienced in bike repair as I've always had a hobby for bike mechanics but if anything goes pear shaped I'll get my dad to help who used to be a bike mechanic.

Oh and I've seen enough 125 advice threads to know that I should just "get a bigger bike" which would be nice except I don't have the time to do my full bike test so please don't just spam me with that.

TL;DR

Help me find a decent/affordable 125 to fix up and ride for a few months. Thumbs Up

Thanks,

James

You've got time (and money) to work on a bike - and it's got to to be wicked fast, innit - but you can't spare 2 hours and £121.50 to get yourself a license and show that you're minimally competent to pop wheelies and dodge the popo?

You're kidding nobody but yourself.

It's entirely up to you, but if you don't get your license by January 19th 2013 then you'll have to put in a lot more time and money.

Your choice.

I want to work on a bike for the fun of it on the weekends, because I'm doing unpaid full time work at the moment which takes all week. Thumbs Up

I would go for my full bike test however I'd have to get my theory booked, assuming I pass that then book my test which could take a few months by which time I'll be doing an apprenticeship and getting some money in. Money to go towards a car (or bike).

I never said anything about it having to go "wicked fast" and I also don't appreciate the chav reference seeing as I'm far from being a chav.. You don't have to be so hostile I'm only looking for some decent advice from people whom I thought would have some good knowledge to pass on; as opposed to some self righteous tool who just likes slating people who don't know as much as he does.

I know I must seem like some scooter kiddie who thinks he knows it all - which isn't the case. I'm sorry if that's how I'm coming across because people like that irritate me and I'd hate to be put into that stereotype.

P.S. The only times I've ever attempted a wheelie were on a push bike. I don't ride my ped like a dickhead. Wink

Laughing Rogerborg isn't being hostile, wait for MrWiki to arrive Laughing

If you aren't about speed, stick with a 4 stroke.

You'll pick up a CG in iffy condition or a fair few 125 chinese sheds for that price.

A car will cost a fortune for the first years insurance... cost me £1500 Shocked

Haha I've seen enough threads of people my age asking for bike advice to know to expect that sort of thing, so I'll just take it in stride when I'm told I'm an idiot because in all fairness I don't know as much about bikes as someone who's been riding for years, but I'll listen and not be a dick about it! Wink

Not a fan of the chinese stuff, as I said I can get quite a lot of spare parts discounted I'll stick with a conventional 125 make. Preferably a 2 stroke because I know they're easier to work on Thumbs Up. (I'm not out to spend loads on performance parts, just enough to have a bike that'll do 75 comfortably)

Insurance is way too expensive.. I'm 18 and to have my own policy on a 1.6 Astra 5 door would be £3,500 for a year!

I'll have to go under a parents' policy as a named driver. Apparently you have to be the registered keeper of a car for a certain amount of time with some insurance companies before you can put a named driver on the policy for it. The chances of me driving soon are slim..

No just over the bridge, undecided on what I am doing with it yet, may just put new barrel/piston/head on and either part ex it or give to G/F, will let you know though
