Hi again all, looking for some more help and your thoughts on this one please:-

Looking for a reliable run around and i came across a 1993 XJ600 Diversion. I have'nt viewed the bike yet, and forgot to ask about service history, but owner says it's in good all round condition for the year.
It has 59000 on the clock and has T&T until April this year.
Seller is asking for £800.
Is this simply too high for a said bike ?
What sort of mileages are they capable of ?
Anyone got a high mileage one ?
Your thoughts / advice on this would be much appreciated.

Cheers,
Dale.

Not uncommon to see a divvy with over 50k on the clocks.
Reliable engines if treated well.

A bit overpriced, £500-750 seems more reasonable.

Electrics are known to go on them, more likely on a higher mileage one.

Header pipes are absolute cack, unless they've been replaced for stainless steel.

Bit expensive. Nemo picked his 1993 XJ600 diversion s up in june last year for £780, 15,000 miles near immaculate with full history.

The engine will take that mileage (and more) if even partly looked after, but the price is a bit steep.

Update:- just found out that recently the bike has had an oil change, brake fluid change, new exhaust (not sure whether full or part) and a new back tyre. Will try to find out about any service history.

Thanks to all for your replies so far. Most welcome.

Anyone can change the oil just before selling (or after buying). When's the last time it was changed, and the time before that?

I'd let someone else take a gamble on it; find a lower mileage one for the same price. Sure, it can do high mileages without major problems, but you know what? It can also do low mileages, and there's no particular honour in going rounds the clocks.

Its not just the engine with that mileage, its the chassis too. Brake discs and calipers, chain and sprockets, wheel bearings, swingarm bearings are all likely to be worn if they haven't been looked after and especially if its been ridden in winter.
Sounds expensive to me, look for something a bit less used.

This.
As someone who a few years ago got stung very badly on a totally shagged 45,000 mile CB500.

Agree the price is too much for that mileage. Paddy's probly about right with 500 tops - depending on other factors such as condition, tax/mot, work needing done. Lots of Divvys about so you will find a better one than this.

I bought a 93 model with 82k on the clocks two days ago. It's in ok nick, engines a bit loud and knocky but I'm sure it's probably been like that for a few thousand miles.

Seems to handle okay, engine is smooth and surprisingly nippy.

Interesting, did it come with T&T ? If you are riding it around for the next couple of days, please keep us updated as to how you find the bike. Are you just using it for getting about / commuting ect ?
Do keep updating your findings.
Cheers.

Way overpriced mate.

Shop around, for that money you are looking at a 98 onwards with 12000-15000 on it and even less in some cases.

There are plenty around Thumbs Up

Holy hell, 59,000 miles is LOADS! I personally doubt i'd ever buy a bike with that many miles, just think... it was 59,000 now, by the time you bought it, it might have 60,000 miles... it wouldn't have much more left in it before something happens are you need to replace the engine or something...

As some of the other said, £500 seems about right - if it does happen to seize up after another 5,000 miles, then you havent wasted a lot of money have ya. Smile

Just keep shopping around and you'll find something.

Hi again guys, thanks for all your input. I'm not going to buy said bike. I take heed of your suggestions that there is something better out there, for same price but with much lower miles, but i simply cannot find it.
I'm looking on ebay, Motorcycle supermarket, gumtree ect, for anything suitable, i.e. CB500, GS, ER5 ect - not just a Diversion, but anything within 50 miles of me (Huddersfield) but nothing. Dont really want to travel any further than that. But i do need something soonest to get about on. Budget is £1000 MAX - as i need to factor insurance ect.
Is / are there any sites i'm missing ?
Recommendations / any help / loinks much appreciated. Smile
Cheers.

The classified ads section in your local paper is probably the best place to look.
All bikes for sale in your local area, all on one or two pages and are usually reasonably priced!

I think most people who sell bikes on ebay, overestimate how much their bike is actually worth.

I paid 400 with mot til september and tax til aprik.
Getting about for now yea, but will use it for fun riding in summer. Already ordered -2 front sprocket for a bit of one wheeled fun and it goes round my favourite set of bends just fine. Commuting yeah, but my commute is only 12 miles. Doesn't need choke at all even when the seat is icy like half an hour ago.

Rate it below a GT550 for cheap transport though as of yet though, but above a GPZ

That's the problem - someone spends £300 quid on bits for a £500 bike and expects to get their money back.

The exhaust for my £600 NTV cost £200 IIRC and there is no way anyone would pay £800 for it.

It's not a good time of year to buy a hack, there's very little out there. If you can wait until March, the market will be flooded with them again though.

I thought this time of year was the best time to "Bag a bargain."
