PostPosted: 17:45 - 25 Dec 2011    Post subject: Legality of Neon Lights Reply with quote

Hi

Have read through the The Road Vehicles Lighting Regulations 1989 and could not find anything that strictly prohibits the use of green neon lights to be emitted from under my bike.

I am thinking of having such fitted so as to cast a green reflection on the road directly under my bike.

Can anyone assist me in ascertaining the correct understanding of the legalities on such, please?

Fanks Very Happy

IIRC certain colours are not allowed. Blue and green because they are used by the emergency services.

From behind only red light can be visible, from the front only white. Yellow lights can be made visible from all angles as warning lights. Some other colours are forbidden such as Blue which are police only. Green are for doctors so expect to get in trouble.

Even if there is no road traffic law you risk getting arrested by the fashion police Smile

As such; however, my proposed neons would not be flashing, nor would they be on top of my bike - they would be hidden bulbs underneath so as to only light up the ground immediately beneath my bike.

I was going to say... They are against the laws of taste and decency, and as such the punishment is automatic and instant as soon as you are seen on the bike.

You look like a prize twat!

Remember kids, bikes aren't like lego. You can't easily take a part from one bike and then fit it to another.

The regulations on colours probably bans it under No vehicle shall be fitted with a lamp which is capable of showing any light to the rear, other than a red light, except–. No exemption for green lights, although you might argue that the light isn't to the rear (likely they would argue the illumination could be seen).

All the best

The bulb doesn't have to be directly visible in order for it to be classed as a light. Also it doesn't need to be flashing to be a problem. Stick a blue light on your car and drive past a police car and see what happens. If you're lucky you'll get done for impersonating a police man Laughing

Please don't get neon lights for your bike. I am not someone to judge someone by their choice of bike, but if they slap shit like that on it then prepare to get the piss taken out of you.

Yep, although if just a blue white you might be able to argue it.

Well lets just say my MOT tester had to turn a blind eye.....

That has to be down to the joy of being old and riding a sensible bike Laughing

They just appear like a vain cry for attention and also the previously mentioned reason:

If neon lights are what you really want though then go for it. Thumbs Up

You can only fit neons in conjunction with fluorescent rim tape. It's the law.

If your bike has wire spoke wheels you must also add spokey dokeys.

I have always wondered about that. Blue LED's seem to be a lorry drivers favourite decoration.

Its pretty and all, but off putting if comming the other way.
My Sons Dad has told me, (He works in the Fire Service) Emergency vehicle lighting is generally used to clear the right of way for emergency vehicles, or to warn on-coming motorists of potential hazards, Yet they dont have to use them.... If they dont want to...
So, how do Lorry drivers get away with 'decorating' there Cab....
Coca Cola Lorry leaving here was awesome, but again, off putting looking at it and not the road ahead Laughing

I very nearly took out a Civic the other day because the muppet was driving on sidelights at night, the sidelights were red LED's so at first glance I thought it was a car going away from me Evil or Very Mad

Sure we've been through this before, there is one exemption for a rear green flashing light (if it hasn't been changed) on a civilian vehicles in one case only but I can't think of any vehicle it has been used on.
