Posted: 12:11 - 18 Jan 2012 Post subject: How (not) to: Repair an exhaust. My failed attempts. |
 |
|
On my way back home the day after boxing day, about 60 or so miles from home, a huge section of exhaust blew out:

The Video doesn't do the sound justice, it is properly painfully loud. Sounds very V4'ish at high revs though which is sexy.
I planned on doing a genuine "how to" guide for here at the time but forgot to take pictures while I was doing it, I did however do a reasonable repair, using a soup tin, some jubilee clips, and a fuckton of chemical metal. Unfortunately the repair blew out a week or two ago:

So yesterday as I had a day off I figured I'd attempt to repair it again, only this time my budget was precisely £0, so I reused the jubilee clips and found the only empty metal thing I could find..
First of all get all needed things ready. Make sure to open ratchet set upside down:

Next wedge the deodorant can in roughly the correct place and tighten the jubilee clips until you are certain you must be denting the exhausts.

Finally realise that you forgot to apply any sort of sealant such as the gungum you bought out specifically for the job, think "sod it" and decide the job is done as it's cold and your fingers are feeling numb.
Video after repair. Despite the bodgery it is actually much more reasonable sounding, even without anything to seal the gaps. I expect it shall blow out in another week or two but hopefully I'll have a little more money then and can do a proper job.
Anyway to summarise, don't take any mechanical advice from me! ____________________ I am a bellend, I am a man of constant sorrow, I am a gummy bear, I am a rock. |

I'm all for the "redneck" / DIY repair... I did a few DIY jobs (including a similar exhaust repair) on my old GPZ.
As you mentioned it'll probably blow again very shortly, but such are the joys of biking on a limited or non-existant budget ____________________ 1st bike (Sept'06 - May'10) : 1991 GPZ500S / Current bike (since Nov 2009) : 2003 Suzuki Bandit 600N

I don't see anything wrong with your repair?
I'd expect nothing more from my local garages ____________________ ♥ YZF-R6 '05 ♥

Outstanding repair! Proper 'riding on a budget' stuff, love it
I've had good results with chemical metal, bits of biscuit tin, coathanger wire and gun gum, lasted ages. MOT man didn't like it though
I think they are a bit past the welding stage unfortunatly, think you're going to have to bite the bullet and source some new/better ones ____________________ RD350LC/YPVS Race Bike and enough bits to start another one! - RD350YPVS Race Bike - TZR250 Race Bike - ZX9R - ZZR1400 project - DRZ400SM - RD400 - TS100 - TY250 - More info @ www.waveracing.co.uk or www.ypmrc.co.uk |
