Hi all.

I'm just about to do my CBT, and i'm looking for a nice, cheap-ish 50cc, but i don't want a ped or anything, i'm looking for a sports looking one, just without the big engine, any advice would be grateful (:

I take it you aren't old enough to have a bike over 50cc?

ped is short for 'moped'.. a vehicle classification for a machine that has an engine under 50cc, power under 3.5bhp, and a top speed not exceeding 35mph.... or at least that's the older defanition; before 1977 there was no speed or power limit, but it had to have pedals, and since the mid 90's the EU have been 'metrifying' the power and speed figures, incrementally rounding down so that I think now they aren't allowed to go more than 28mph or something!

What you are describing as a "'ped", I presume is a twist and go scooter...... these come in variouse capacities and performances and aren't all 'peds... you can get ones that are 600cc for crissiks!

As for 'sports' styled mopeds; not a lot of choice, Basically the Derbi GP50 or the Aprilia RS50.. neither are particularly 'cheap' and bought by speed freak, know-nothiong 16 year-olds, unless you buy brand new, chances are it wil have been severely tortured and abused, trying to go fast, and rather than had any propper maintenence, been subjected to teen-age ideas of 'de-restricting' with a set of rusty spanners and a blunt screw-driver, trying to make it go an infantesimally small amount faster.

Racer crouch riding possition, makes some sence at 135mph, taking teh wind blast of your chest, not so wonderful crawling along at 35, cramped up, with limited visability, and all your weight on your wrists.....

Looks good to the girls in the back window of the bus coming home from school though...... until the bust gets out onto the NSL roads and leaves you choking on the Diesel fumes...... then they just point and laugh.

The Dirt-Bike styled 50's are a little more useful; riding possition is less cramped and you get better alround visability.... and with teh same restrictions in place, just as fast.

Derbi Senda is popular choice in that vein. Think they do a Super-Motard version with street-tyres rather than knoblies that may be a tad more useful.

BUT, for what they cost, and what they do; PERSONALLY, I think I'd play 'ped-boi' for a year.

Scooters are cheap and plentiful, and if you dont pick a posey-trendy kiddie-go-kwick one, cheaper to insure.... so what they dont have gears... still as fast... sorry... slow!

And if you want 'Cheap', why go looking for something 'expensive' just for the looks?

Save your pennies, and put it towards a 125 for NEXT year; which has much more about it and you can start getting better value for your money.

Good luck and welcome to the forum;

If you want to: 'Looks good to the girls in the back window of the bus coming home from school though...... until the bust gets out onto the NSL roads and leaves you choking on the Diesel fumes...... then they just point and laugh'.

Then clearly that is your choice, it is optional though whether you want to be/look like a complete arse https://teflonmike.craywiki.co.uk/0_Lo_030_Adventures_014_NPY.htm

Do the CBT and enjoy it! you will have a much better idea of what you are after when you have had a go riding about a bit. It is addictive and your needs will quickly out grow your wallet!
