hi, ive been offered a 1999 exc 300 off a lad i went to school with.
i know it has just had a full engine rebuild and some other little bits and pieces but it doesnt have any tax or mot.

im interested in getting it and turning it into a supermoto and occasionally a bit of green laning. what wheels will fit this model and how easy is it to switch between mx and sm?

thanks for any help

also the bike is £1200

Seems a bit steep. My 300 was a 2001, with the USD forks etc, and that was a grand with enough spares to fill a car.

I'd offer 900

How sure are you its had a full engine rebuild? People I know have mugged off other people they know just to flog a bike.

Unless he has got reciepts or something I wouldn't offer offer over the odds.

And your probs looking £300 ish for some sm rims but bargains can be had

100% sure i went to school with him and see him out on ride outs sometimes. hes mentioned the bike before and the work hes done on it.

his bird has just had a baby so hes selling his crosser instead of his road bike.

any idea what bike the wheels i need are off? and weather they are a straight swap or require spacers e.c.t?

ktms bottom off at about £1000 you need ktm sm rims with a 20mm front spindle no spacers required

Normally sm rims come with larger discs. People either have spacers to mount the callipers further out, or a whole front brake system (calliper, hose, master cylinder, lever etc.) as it can be a pain in the ass mounting then bleeding all of the time.

But you could run smaller discs on the sm rims, but I wouldn't run a larger disc on the knobblies, personally.

imo if you can only affor a 1200 bike you couldent to run a 300 2 stroke on the road in sm trim due to petrol / oil costs

ive got a k7 gsxr 750 and a cbr600 track bike. just because im not buying a brand spanking 6k bike doesnt mean i cant afford to run one.

the reason im after a cheap one is, ive never had a sm so ill probably fall off and ive only had one other enduro bike so ill deffinately fall off.

its a bit of fun for short local rides, the wet and in the mud and when i dont want to get the gsxr out

this bike has come up at a good price and i know the engine is a good un.

ive been told where someone has some sm wheels with tyres for £250 so im going to have a sm for a little over a grand.

cheers for the help everyone by the way and if i do end up with it tomorrow i will upload some pics and let you know.

one last thing, is it worth getting upside down forks off a newer model or will the originals be good enough

If you change the brackets, I know. If you change the calliper though, you bleed it.

What was bodged about it? 520 rear shock on it that that's the same fitment, and the wiring was fine, so it was probably your tarded mate.

reggie, what was the 'pure dreamer' comment referring to?

anyway, if we can all stop arguing for 5 mins, ive bought the bike. i ended up paying 800 quid purely because the lad was skint, and ive been offered some ms wheels for 250 so hopefully going to get them.

apparently im going to need a different chain for the sm and off road wheels? aswell as some spacers for the calliper. is that true?
