It means I won't be buying a new pair of boots this month. Laughing

Shims are like, little wodgey things that wodge valves in the right place or something. Mine were way out, so needed lots of them to wodge them back in the right place.

I r teknikal.

Anyway, bike feels a lot better now. And it doesn't need doing for another 16,000 miles. Thumbs Up

8 hours labour. Thats the same as "Suzuki Mechanic of the Year" (ha!) took to strip and rebuild my gearbox. Although I believe he took some drastic time saving measure during the reassembly. Laughing

They probably just couldn't be bothered with the fiddliness of it, I remember Goose spouting forth some very inventive swear words involving the small-handed Japanese when he was doing the spark plugs. Very Happy

That did include other things as well - oil change, plugs, sorting all the mullered fairing screws and bolts, replacing assorted missing bits and putting the rear spindle back in the right way round (go previous owner). Valves are a 5 hour job as standard.

They only charged me for 6 hours though. Chiswick Honda rock ass. Thumbs Up

The mechanic that did the work for me actually took photos of the work he did and posted them on visordown (not sure where the post is now) Anyway he couldn't get over how tiny everything was, he actually praised the design of it and said he really enjoyed working on it.

The spark plugs in my 106 are harder to get at than the cbr250's Rolling Eyes

Wow 15 of the buggers. They can be a nightmare if you haven't got the tools. You have to measure each of them to get its thickness and also measure the distance between it and the cam lobe. They actually fit in between the top of your valves and the bit of the cam that pushes down on them. They wear out after a while (as you have noticed Confused ) and usually cost about a fiver each. Your valves will open wider now so the bike will perform a bit better. Thumbs Up Very Happy

Hi

When Kev (not our Kev, the one from VisorDown) did the shims on my FZ for me there were 19 (out of 20) out of spec. 10 he managed to correct by swapping shims round, 9 needed to be bought.

The shims should not wear out. On the FZ the shims are under the buckets that make contact with the cams. To change the shims you need to remove the cams.

All the best

Keith

I remember the post, just did a search but the pics have been deleted. It's here if anyone's interested.

When I did the valves on my VFR at 32000 miles, I needed one new shim. Like the FZ, the VFR shims are under the buckets so it's a cam out job too. Fortunately, the gear driven cams are much easier to remove than chain driven ones. Just as well, cos there's 4 of the buggers and access to the front cylinder is a bit tight Wink

I'd guess in the region of £400, going on £50 per hour then parts.

Shims need doing every 16,000 miles swaffs. Thumbs Up

Funny, the guy called to tell me the price and I said 'Oh well, could be worse. I could have just bought a TLR and had the gearbox fall to bits'. Very Happy
