Hello All,
Fixed my previous break issue and all is well except in a few weeks I have a MOT due on my scooter (speedfight 2 100cc). Anyway, after a miscellaneous conversation with my granda he mentioned that its unlikely to pass its test due to the noise as its quite loud. After asking why he went on to tell me that where the exhaust mounts onto the engine only one bolt is there as the other has somehow come out (last owner probably didnt use the right screws or its rusted).

Anyway hes telling me that theres a chance the actual mount bit on the engine is rusted and that theres a chance I would have to pay someone to redo it etc.

I dont know much about scooters as you can probably tell and rely on my granda. He knows a bit but cant do more complex things like this if the holes the bolt goes through are rusted then he cant fix it as and I quote he said 'its a nightmare'

Im wondering what the worst case scenario is with this and how hard it would be to DIY is there a cheap skate way of doing it like a clamp or something like that?

Sorry if im garbling on a bit but im sure you get me Very Happy

Cheers!

So is this what you're saying,
Your exhaust is only held to the cylinder block with one bolt when it should have two. And it's beleived that the thread for the missing bolt could be damaged or rusted?

If that's the case i would do this,
1. Remove the relevant bodywork to make accessing the area easier.
2. Completely remove the exhaust
3. Inspect the threads for both the bolts, if one is damaged you may be able to run a tap through it, or i beleive there is space to fit a locknut behind the exhaust mount.
4. When you refit the exhaust use a new gasket as this will prevent any leaks.

You can get to your exhaust header by taking the seat off (Three nuts).
My exhaust never used to sit flush with the block, and blew a little. But not so much that you could hear or notice without actually putting your hand near the blow.
If one bolt is missing (originally they would have been dowels threaded into the block with a nut to then clamp the exhaust) then find another that matches the remaining one and see if it screws in smoothly and straight. If not, then the thread is buggered and you'll need to run a tap (thread cutter for internal threads) down it to see if you can restore the old thread. If it's properly stripped then (personally i'd get an engineer/established mechanic to do it) run an oversize tap down it and (if you can) find a bolt to match.

Old Thread Alert!
