Before Christmas I did some work to a truck.
It consisted of welding channel section to the main frame rails and on the end was box section for upright posts to go on to. The truck was rated at 7ton but the owners were dropping 8m logs on it and loading it up to 15ton.
Yesterday the truck came back with massive holes in the main frame rails where, the welds had ripped out large pieces of them.
When we first started the job I told my boss repeatedly that we should not weld to the frame rails because they are made to flex and welding them would cause a hard spot and pretty much cause what has happened. He just told me to get on with the job, because I didn't know what I was on about. (I know quite a few truck mechs and they have all said not to weld to them)
As I said the truck came in yesterday with all the welds torn out of the frame rails on one side, and the truck pretty much written off. I took the blame for it since it was my job, but last night it came to me, that it was not my welds that broke or did that, it was the 21yo app that had welded that side because I could not work late that week. It was only after we had finished the job, he thanked me for letting him do the hard stuff because he had only been doing the job 3month and started a week before me. He never said he couldn't weld that sort of stuff. Since we was doing it through mirrors and upside down at arms length one handed.
Extract from the letter I received:
This written warning will be placed on your personnel file but will be disregarded after six months, provided your output improves to a consistently satisfactory level and there are no further instances of come-back from clients.
I have never had one of my welds break, because I know what I can and cannot do. If I was in the other lads position I would have said, "You do it mate, because I can't."
Now I am in the shit facing loosing my job because he held back his experience to me, and i'm taking the rap for it.
I told my supervisor tonight and he just flatly said "Shouldn't have let him weld it." How the hell was I meant to know he couldn't bloody weld!!!
So I put this to you, do I stay as I am and take the final written warning or drop the young lad in it for his welds breaking?
I want to keep my job, but also don't want this hanging over my head. I primarily work in a factory right now, so don't see the boss that often, and when I do he never talks to me.
Bit pissed off as you can probably tell. |

If it wasn't you then you shouldn't carry the can.
However:

This says it WAS you. Now you can thank yourself lucky that you only got a disciplinary, because if there was a catastrophic failiure on the road and someone got killed you could easily find yourself up in front of a coroners enquiry, and take it from me - you don't want that. |
Everyone else at the firm is young. At 22 I am the 3rd oldest.
He is as said 21, everyone there are qualified tradesmen (as i thought). And he had told me before hand he had gone to college for 4years and got all his papers and stuff. Not that he hadn't actually done any proper work, and on his days off had been working at Wilko's.
I am left with the sticky situation of, drop him in it, for not only wrecking the truck but also lying to pretty much everyone that was working on it. OR take the rap and just try not take it out on him if we work together again. |

You were given a task. You passed it on to somebody else, by the sound of it without your/his manager's authorisation. It failed.
How would it be anybody else's fault but yours? ____________________ My other bike's a Monster... |

You said he was an apprentice, but now he's qualified and certificated.
TBH, I don't know what I can say next that's not going to be uncomplimentary. ____________________ a.k.a 'Geri'

Took me a while to realise this is warped posting... Again!
Please. punch your boss, get the sack and stop using up jobs other people who appreciate them could have.
I can't believe it hasn't sunk in yet. I've never heard of anyone who had so much trouble in their work. There comes a time when the only conclusion can be that you are doing it wrong. You can only hold a job down for a few months before you either leave in a huff or are sacked for a misdemeanour. This sorry cycle has been going on for years now. YEARS!
Face facts. You are a shit employee with a shit attitude. It would be better foir society if you took yourself out of employment and got yourself an injectable drug addiction. At least then nobody would be surprised when you shit in your own nest. Leave the paid, partially skilled manual labour to those who will work for and appreciate it. ____________________ “Rule one: Always stick around for one more drink. That's when things happen. I think stinkwheel is wrong about you, as he doesnt know what its like to work somewhere where new employees are ten a penny and bosses are stupid and blame things on little guys (as I'm advocating you to do). |
But it's not quite the same is it? From what I am led to believe, supposedly skilled welders are not ten a penny, especially those that can weld to an accuracy in the micrometres with the naked eye, so it's really not comparable to telemarketing staff which I am aware are basically employed on short rotation because they are expendable.
Anyway, that's all from me, I feel dirty and violated having posted in one of Warpeds' threads...... as a matter of fact I think finding out I had been molested as a child would be preferable to responding to one of Warpeds' posts.

Can a mod change his username back to Warped and stop all this silly prancing around?
Thirded on the Denmark claim.
Warped, I don't think that you are a bad person and I do actually want to think the best of you, but you are clearly an habitual liar and a fantasist. There's just no way to square all your stories and make you a man of your word.
If even half of your tales are true, then in a work environment you clearly need constant supervision by a grown up to protect other people from the consequences of your delusions of adequacy.
I'm surprised that you last as long as you do in any job. I'd have you out on your ear (to be fair) the 2nd time I caught you spewing your childish passive-aggressive line after yet another screw up or tantrum.
And that's me charitably assuming that you are actually in employment in the trade that you claim to be in, rather than weaving these tales out of whole cloth. It's just as likely that you're running a till at Burger King, or dole sponging.
tl;dr version - your word is worth nothing, and what else does a man have? ____________________ Biking is 1/20th as dangerous as horse riding.

On that note (and assuming that any of that this is true, which is a huge ass-u-me) if you had the sack that you were born with, you'd either:
1) File a formal grievance claiming constructive dismissal, asserting that you are being fitted up for a job that failed in the way that you warned it would.
2) Punch your boss in the throat for same, then take a picture of yourself teabagging him.
You really do come across as a whiny muttering manchild doormat. You're doing a man's job, insist on being treated as one. ____________________ Biking is 1/20th as dangerous as horse riding.

Top find chap....
So warped is on £17 quid ph to risk the life of others, owns two houses (one in London and one in Grimsby), did a 4 year apprenticeship in 8 months. All this on top of finding a pair of flares, and paid £5000 for a girl....
He is a god of a man, and everything I (and the other cruel, cruel people on here) have said about him deserves nothing but contempt..
Thats it, I've finally realised this forum will implode without him on it, and I'm off to join gone boarding dot com... ____________________ "I hate to advocate drugs, alcohol, violence or insanity to anyone, but they've always worked for me." Hunter S Thompson
