Fails to start. Was jerky and backfiring beforehand. Fuel is pissing out of the overflow. Feels like a carb issue.

Just a little update that really isn't an update at all:

I've checked the fuel tap isn't leaking and stops when 'on' and 'reserve' are selected. I've replaced the plugs (not too bad) and air filter (disgustingly filthy) and also had a sniff inside the oil filler - I can't smell odour la petrol so hopefully all is good.

After charging the battery I tried to crank it over and although seemingly wanting to start - it doesn't. Nothing new here though, after any lay-up longer than a few days it always requires either bumping or a battery booster jump. I can turn the engine over by spinning the rear wheel in a high gear so I assume it's not dead..

So I still haven't got her started but at least we are investigating. A battery booster is on the shopping list and with any luck she'll start on that.

If not then the carbs will be off. <<shudders>>

Cleaning the carbs occasionally isn't that big a thing and well worth doing. Certainly makes a big difference to easy starting on off-roaders, which of course are more likely to get stuff stuck in them.
Makes you get each jet out and inspect by eye. I find the most effective way to clear them out is to put one between my lips and give a sharp exhalation - much more effective than sticking an air line around it in my experience.

I seem to remember my zx9 was quite sensitive to battery.
Any cars etc you can jump it from? If no jump leads, I recently get a spare set from 'pound stretcher' for £3 I think.

Yea I know I should clean the carbs out anyway, although it's always nicer doing it on a bike that is running relatively well anyway and not caked in crap. Razz

My drive is steep with a 'ridge' at the top which prevents cars from getting up and down easily meaning 20ft long jump leads would be required. Unfortunately this also means I can't push the thing up alone either which in the past has meant waiting for a mate to come round to help. I figure finally buying a booster would free me from this situation...

Smile

Before pulling the carbs off check you have a spark. Might be something simple like a dodgy kill switch.
