My Brother Rex died two days ago after a short (18 months) fight with Motor Neurone Disease (ALS).
He lived in Phuket, Thailand and documented a lot of his favourite rides as 'phuketrex' on youtube - my other two brothers and myself were able to visit him just before Christmas of 2010 and we spent a fantastic (but very short) week with him, all on scooters exploring and experiencing his adopted home.
Rex had just been diagnosed with MND/ALS and had gone from a fit, healthy man, to a wheelchair in less than six months.
When we saw him he'd just had a new Honda Click scooter converted to a 3 wheeler - took 2 days (Anything is possible in Thailand!) so he could keep mobile. At other times he was transported in a motorcycle sidecar/wheelchair carrier, again made almost overnight - can you imagine health & safety issues with these in the UK?

I was following Rex riding the 3-wheeler along Patong bay when a Thai motorcycle cop pulled up next to him, I thought we were in for at least a fine, but all the cop did was ask a few questions (where was it made, what was it for etc.) and then with a cheery thumbs up and saying 'Good idea' he rode off! |

I got stopped in Thailand for not wearing a helmet. The one they gave me was like a horse riding helmet and it didn't fit so i was better off without the distraction. I thought i was all set for a massive fine especially designed for whiteys. I got the helmet out to show it to him, he smiled gave a thumbs up and left |
