I've read that some snakes can move at 20mph for a short period. Imagine one chasing you.

I don't think that's strictly true. The fastest snake over the ground is the African Black Mamba (The only Black part of a Black Mamba is the inside of it's mouth) But a man could out run a Mamba. It is unlikely the snake would chase you. Possibly in defence/panic it would follow for a few metres.
I have seen Green Mambas shooting across 10mtr. wide mining roads where they 'look' fast but I think that is an illusion.
When I worked in Ghana we often heard reports of 'Stupid Whitemen' who said they'd seen a 'Black Mamba'. I knew they had most likely seen a Black Forest Cobra which look similar in body shape to the uninformed.
But are BLACK. Black Mambas are Grey-ish.

The important thing is if you are within striking distance about 15-20% of the snakes length then it would probably get you unless you can detect the strike and move faster than the snake. I don't think there are too many people who have the ability to do that though.

black mamba is the fastest, up to 20 KM/hr.
