My name is Richard and I am currently conducting some research as part of my PhD at the University of Chester. The primary focus of the research is to explore the immediate and long term impact that serious injury has, following a motorcycling incident on the biker/motorcyclist and also their significant others e.g. wife, husband, parents, friends and so forth. Furthermore I would like to explore how as a result of a fatal accident, significant others are affected by this. Most research conducted tends to take a top down approach, which looks at accident causation and statistical analysis and subsequently fail to take into account the views of those who matter the most. This research, aims to explore the views, perceptions and attitudes of motorcyclists/bikers themselves, concerning issues of safety, protection and risk. I am interested specifically in the views, experiences and attitudes of those all those who ride bikes between the ages of 20-60. I would very much appreciate it, if members interested in this research took the time to contact me to discuss it in more detail.
Thank you for taking the time to read this and I look forward to hearing from those interested soon.
Regards

Well, at least it's not another design student wanting help with his helmet homework. Very Happy

best research is done through experience.

I suggest you get a bike, and smash it!

I once crashed into a wall. Luckily I destroyed it with my man strength, I then went on to fight a dragon and win! My family were thoroughly impressed and girls wanted to touch my willy! If you would like anymore information on this pm me, I'll give you all the deets.

Seriously only ever came off twice, once was just a lapse of concentration where I didn't notice a curve in the road and just went straight into a lamp post and the other was some asshole pulling out on me. Put me in hospital for a good while.

We can donate live bodies for experimentation.

Dumball and Warped this week and probably another 2 per week for around six months. Deal? (spits on palm and offers hand)

I once took part in a similar study following an accident. The trouble was they seemed to consider what happened as being a serious accident and I didn't really. The researcher seemed a trifle miffed that I wasn't displaying any evidence of psychological problems (other than wanting the cast off so I could ride my bike again).

I'd be wary of suggestive questions too. The way that lot harped on and on in a repetitive and somewhat dull "sliding scale" questionaire, you almost start to convince yourself that you ought to be having anxiety attacks/flashbacks/difficulty driving again etc. Ask someone if they are ok often enough and forcefully enough, they'll start to wonder if they actually are ok.

I'd also be having a careful think about the definition of what constitutes a serious injury because what a medic and a dyed in the wool motorcyclist would consider "serious" may be two entirely different things.

Wotcha.

To put it bluntly. I had a serious accident, and it has totally fucked my life up. In all honesty, it would have been for the best if the accident had been fatal. . . . . . .can't you just tell today ain't been what you would call one of my good days.

I`m not going to go into loads of detail, suffice to say:
Both on and off the road, I`ve had my share of crashes (about 6)
On all occassions I have been lucky enough to not lose a limb or become paralyised.

A rider in my own team hit me so hard that I broke two bones in my neck.
That one was the one that caused the most problems after the event.
After walking around for six weeks not knowing that something was that wrong, I went to the doctors.
The resulting care (brace, x-rays, medication, and physio, ect ect) lasted two years on and off.

I suppose that my mindset is similar to a lot of bikers, in that if we walk away from the crash everything else is a bonus.
Even if it takes us a few weeks/months to walk away from that crash.

Were my Family or Friends truamatised by the event? I dont think they were to worried once they knew I was on the mend.
Any lasting effects? yes! I am now a bit more cautious when out on the bike.
Will I ever stop riding bikes?NO!, only when I`m to old and feeble or dead.

I hope this is of some help to you, now get along and do your homework sonny Laughing Laughing
