hi, bought a frank thomas extreme race jacket off of ebay, its suppose to be size 48 Uk and 58 euro, turns up and its much smaller than my 44uk textile jacket. What is going on here? Is there really that much difference between brands?
It was suppose to be XL but is more like a medium. I'm 5'10 and the FT jacket stops above my belly button !!
Looking at getting an Arlen Ness jacket size 48 off of ebay, it looks bigger than the Frank thomas jacket, will I have the same problem?

thanks, Grant

Unfortunately sizes are only an average the only way to get any good fitting gear is to try it on for fit . buying of e-bay is sometimes a gamble.
You say the Arlen Ness looks bigger than the Frank Thomas but is it, if you buy that one it's a gamble again and until you get it you wont know if it is a good fit.

Its a real pain, even sizing difference within the brand, bought FT leather trousers at same time, again one size up to make sure, and they are too big. Makes no sense !

Don't forget to take into account that textile jackets are usually worn over a few layers whereas leathers are worn over a base layer or tshirt and need to be like a skintight fitting to do their job.

But sizes aren't as universal as they might be, my feet are too big for Size 11 in some brands, yet have room to spare in Size 9 of others. Even trouser sizes, I can range from a 30-34 inch waist, and 26-30 inside leg.

I have to go up from a 42 to a 44 when buying leather jackets, but can't say I noticed a difference in size between the FT jacket I bought and the RST jacket I tried on. Although they both sit very much on my waist line, wouldn't be able to zip them as when I lean forward they both ride up my back, I'm told this is what sport jackets do?

I'm with the poster on this one. I had an FT jacket years ago that was too small despite me being a 40" chest and the jacket being something like a 46". I hated that jacket and was almost grateful when somebody nicked it in a nightclub...

I do find jacket sizes a bind generally - I go for L or XL these days just to make sure stuff fits...

Frank Thomas female sizes are a bit generous, in my opinion anyway. I am a 12 and their sizings actually fit me (even after xmas overeating!)
Some trouser sizes are amusing. I had Belstaff trousers, supposedly size 16, would have to lie down to get the buggars done up, but could fit small children down the legs they were so balloon like!

I've got an FT 2-piece with a 46 chest and that is a snug fit on top. Come to think of it the trousers are a bit snug now too... Must stop filling my Ys with custard.
