If i can persuade my mum and dad to let me go second hand, im MOST likely going to get it from a dealer so i have a bit of comeback should anything terrible go wrong (plus i get warranty)

which one is the best to learn on?? im hoping to get a 125cc for less than £1k, but with it coming from a dealer (most likely anyway) it could be difficult...
il cross that road when i have the cash in my back pocket - which bike?

most likely a cg125 i think, but lets see your choices

A GC at that money will be oldest. You also pay a premium for 'CG-Cudos', and the 'legend' you cant go wrong with one 'cos theyz indistructibuble, int they'.

Personally I say avoid CG's FAR too many are the victim of thier own reputation, thrashed, neglected and abused to oblivion, by foilk that REALLY believe that they are indestructible no matter what they do to them, and that 'low' maintenence means NO maintenence and no matter what they do to them, they can sell on for exactly what they paid for the bike, if not thier buy price PLUS any botched repairs or tyres brake pads etc the MOT man made them buy!

Zook? NOT the nicest but servivceable, and probably most you'll get for your money, YBR's being a tad more desirable.

YBR, dealers? You'll be very lucky.

End of teh day; researech CG's very carefully and DO NOT believe the bullshgit that they are the best thing since sliced bread, they CAN be a good bike, but CONDITION IS EVERYTHING, and that means looking past the shiney bits.

All three are pretty uninspiring little learner commuters; none are going to set the worls on fire, but in decent nick and nicely fettled when you get it, for a learner, there isn't much between them. They are all pretty 'sensible' choices.

Pound shoe-leather, look at bikes, and see whats the 'best' of whats out there, BASICALLY...

Go with as clean, straight and tidy as you can get, and as said look further than skin deep, and check brakes and suspension, and steering, look for signs of seriouse crash damage, and bad repairs.

With the CG I would want a test ride to check that the gearbox is working fine, she isn't running rich/lean, clutch isn't too badly abused!

Check all yer lights work etc

And check the condition of the INSIDE of the fuel tank, a badly rusted fuel tank will cause nightmares with the carb and a fuel filter DOESN'T catch everything if its bad. (I used both mesh and paper, neither stopped everything)

I've been looking on Google Maps for motorcycle dealers in your area but to be honest there's fkk all to choose from. If you have £1000 to spend (don't forget the other costs) then it should be enough to buy a decent older 125cc bike from a small dealer, but where you are, there don't seem to be many bikes for sale.

I'd get a YBR 125. They are fantastic bikes. However, I'd get the fuel injected version (post 2008) and always look out for quality and condition. On ebay ATM, there are a few dealers selling them with warranty 2008-2011 plates around £1300-1700

Th EN125 engines are pretty good, I have the same in my GN and she's done 47k. As said you'll probably get more for your money with one of these, CG's have a reputation for being bomb proof but like anything, it's all down to how well (or bad) it's been maintained. I think you'll struggle to find a YBR for sub 1k from a dealer, you may get lucky though. When you've got the cash do the rounds around the local dealers, there's a bike shp local to me who sells their P/X's off cheap if they've got higher mileage/superficial damage etc.... Wink

You'd be lucky to get anything of the sort really, unless you know some local garage or something (I know theres one in loughborough selling a cg125 for like 750)

But if I were you i'd try ebay classifieds and autotrader and check out carefully who you're buying from

I just got a yamaha YBR 2009 which was cat d repaired for £1099 with a new 12 month MOT on it from ebay classifieds, came from "Doctor motorcycle.co.uk" who seemed pretty legit

All went well and amma ridin later now ive got enough for a helmet! Thumbs Up
