Yes, I have joined that very statistic of why insurance companies rip off riders on supersports bikes.

Embarassed

Last week was riding at 27/8mph as did not want an accident, given I had picked up a bad habit of speeding since I had my bike.

The roads were wet from rain a few hours earlier.

Riding in the left lane, a large lorry to my right in the right lane. We move steady and at a constant velocity of under 30mph. A bus slows down in front of me.

In deciding to slow down so I may change lanes to the right lane and not feel boxed in by a lorry and bus, I applied the breaks, er I mean brakes :p

The roads were wet.

My back slipped out and before I knew it low-sided and I land in the right lane just a few feet ahead of the truck. As I roll I see that I have landed in the path of the truck's moving left set of wheels. A previous fear had materialised - I was about to be run over after coming off my bike. With all fear abandoning me, I accepted my fate and prepared to be crushed.

Another roll followed and this point I was parallel to the truck's wheels. Next roll over I see the truck has steered away from his lane [me] into oncoming traffic and had a collision with a car.

I get up, badly bruised about the hips, legs and tailbone, though not feeling anything at the time thanks to the dump of adrenalin, check how all parties are in terms of injuries, then call the police and ambulance.

My insurance said it was my fault because I "lost control of [my] machine". I shamefully accept this. On a day that I was behaving and not speeding or making any aggressive/dangerous manoeuvres, I have an accident. Blessed, yes, that I did not get run over.

Filling out a police issued "Collision/Incident Information Form".

Lorry driver said he saw me go under and steered away to avoid running me over, as to have stopped would mean run over me and drag me under the wheels til it eventually stopped.

This means that my insurance will rape me worse than any sex-starved bugger-loving inmate. I can't imagine what the new premium will be, as already I'm paying £1500 TPFT, and I'm a month away from my 30th.

Cameron's loving cuts means my disabled mother can't keep up with paying her rent, and so I am making up for the shortcomings. Selling the bike means less strain in paying this rent discrepancy.

Selling the bike means the love and happiness, passion and meaning is gone from my life.

Selling the bike means I can look good and dress well everytime I leave my house :p

Selling the bike means repaying and clearing its finance.

On top of that all I hear from friends, family and colleagues is that I should pack riding in as it's far too dangerous and that I was 'lucky' not to get run over. After all, the bitch did throw me in front of a lorry Laughing

My mind is lost.

R&G crash bungs did their job and saved me a lot of money in repairs. All that is needed is a new panel due to mild scratches, and a replaced brake pedal, which is all underway.

I haven't the money for what the renewal premium will be come October. If I wait to sell it then, I will have lost even more value off the bike than if I sell it within the next month.

I'm a loner, so having a bike carries me, and only me; so I don't have to worry about carrying anyone else. But if something happens to me, there's no one to mind my mother. There's no one.

To be a baby Embarassed I'm all disorientated, I don't fully know where to go from here.

Just do what needs to be done in the short term, don't be hard on yourself.

Your doing a grand job looking after mum.

Things will get better.

Note to Mod G - R&G does it again Smile Cool

Thank you, covdude Smile "Short term" - I think I have lost the gift of sight on these things...

Nick_C: I have a zx6r C1H, but not sure for how long. I got that bike because I love it, test rode a Triumph 675 and appreciated my ZX6R even more. Two days later I'm kissing the rims of a lorry :s

Thanks for the consoling words, I know it could have been worse; makes me wonder whether 'next time' will be worse...[/quote]

Learn to ride first, a 50cc moped Might be a good option for you.

Main thing is you're OK. Could have been so much worse.

1500 TPFT does sound a lot mind you. Do you have points/recent claims?

I guess you're right, Drzsta; need to learn to ride better than I was when I braked harder than I should have in the wet. If I continue riding, I will keep that in mind Thumbs Up

Walloper & magicman-alex:

LOL - I suspect my insurance was ridiculously expensive because I had no previous years riding experience, and no no claims on a bike and live in London, and was under 30years old when taking out the policy. No points and no claims when taking out the policy.

The Shaggy D.A.

Great advert for DAS - mind I was travelling at a mere 27mph in a straight - not speeding or using crazy bhp - so this could have taken place easily on a 125cc 14bhp geared bike.

Thanks again, covdude Smile

Well done Mr Lorry driver Clapping

You live, you learn. When the renewal comes through just think it's better than having a lorry squash your guts out your bum and a few quid won't seem too bad.

I'm guessing ' afaik ' mistakes on bigger bikes are easier, i know the ones i've made on my 125, would of had me down on a 600 ... afaik.

Talking of 600s, had you tried insurance on say a 750, i imagine that figure would of been sub 1000.

Also, if you ' bike ' again, you really can have fun and learn a LOT on a 2T unrest 125. Idea

Thumbs Up

So you were hamfisted with the brakes. Meh. It happens.
This is precisely why you were met with some derision on your other threads, though; you're still very, very new to this. Spend some time on a less intense bike than a ZX6R, develop some roadsense, and an understanding of your limits. It'll also be easier on your insurance bill.

sorry to hear!

take it on the chin as it is better to be alive and have them claim off your insurance than to be dead with no claims bonus!

Buy a little 125cc+ scooter for now until things ease up

my vespa is doing me proud the R1 sleeps all day.

scooter petrol prices of £8 a tank for 100 miles feels nice on the wallet!

Glad to hear you're okay, legs and feet intact and all. You were essentially lucky he was looking out for you or it could've been a lot worse. Your insurance is insanely high, and is likely to go up, but you're alive and kicking, able to ride again, count your blessings.

Mistakes are made when you feel you're relatively safe. I've been on the ground more times then I care to remember from the stupid crap I've done. Makes you feel stupid, but it passes.

Sounds like you were lucky that the lorry driver was on the ball.

Your insurance is expensive because you are in a high risk area and a high risk category. As it turns out, the statistics were right because even at your low speed you lost control of your bike in poor conditions.

Don't be too hard on yourself, but don't blame the insurance company either. You'll have to pay five or ten years of premiums before they will recover the cost of your first accident.

Insurance might not be a matter of how much - more a matter of who will? If you already know you can't afford a renewal follow the advice above and sell your bike then buy something cheaper to insure. Use that to learn your roadcraft and build up some no-claims.

Jesus mate.

4 second gap in the wet, ***AT LEAST*** and you should be able to brake, no trouble.
Not saying you weren't in the 4 second thing but you should have been able to slow without losing it.
Anyway, gotta chalk it up to experience I guess?

So, I'm not going to harp on about it but glad you can come here and 'talk' about things. The alternatives are just plain nasty.

Seriously, a freaking lorry will ruin your day and your mum's.

Lets be careful out there Shocked

First off, Glad you didn't get squished... you owe that lorry driver a pint at least.

Maybe try a SV like I did for a year, not a bad bike to insure and quite nimble, cheap to run too Thumbs Up Then I moved up to a supersport when I started scrapeing toes on the SV (and when I saw the Daytona I just had to have it)
