I have a set of Maxxis tires on my CRF450 the front tire is pretty much brand new but the back tire isnt and it has a ''nobbley bit'' missing and can see the wire stuff inside. ive had this happen to me many times on the rear tire as it takes the most stress.

so what is the best MX tires (price no object) Ive only run with Maxxis so never really seen any different with other tires.

My friend runs maxxis tyres on his KX and KTM and he never uses anything else.
And on the times I've spent at the track on my old xr400 which had maxxis tyres on, I've no complaints either, handled well everywhere I went, even on wet roads.

Granted, apart from the tyres that came with my XR originally (which were dunlops i think?) I've never had any other rubber on there, but hey...
If it ain't broke, don't fix right? Thumbs Up

The maxxis tyres were a world apart from the original stock tyres though, and in future they're what I'll continue to fit.

I've run dunlops for years, mainly because we get a club discount but I've never had any trouble with them.

Tyre choice is huge- there is no "ULTIMATE" tyre, if your shedding knobs - then you need to be running hardpack

Tyres are a pretty subjective thing really.

Granted, there are good tyres and there are bad tyres, but on the whole it just comes down to personal preference, what bike you're running, where you're running it and how it's set up.

I remember when me and my mate were both running completely stock GPZ500's and we were both running pirelli which i totally hated but my mate loved - eventually we switched to bridgestone bt45's which i loved, but my mate hated Laughing
They wern't BAD tyres as such, just that due to the fact we rode different the tyres responded differently to both of us.

Tbh, I'm amazed i never properly stacked my XR400r ragging it on wet roads like I did. Those maxxis tyres gripped like no tomorrow.

If you go over 60mph on the road with any knobbly offroad tyre your going to rip the knobblies off.

They seem to be saying good things about Dunlop MX51s in the USA

https://www.dunlopmotorcycle.com/tirecatalog_tire.asp?id=105

At my local Watling Tyres in Swanley they hold a very good stock of MX and enduro tyres. The manager there is very involved with the Sidcup & Distirct MCC and is very experienced with dirtbikes. He has been able to give some good advice to many a rider who is not sure about what is best to use at a certain track ie. Canada heights is quite loamy and sandy,so a soft terrain tyre is ideal. But for a track with stones would quickly tear that type of tyre to shreds. An intermediate tyre would be better as a compromise in those circumstances.

Hmm.. im go to joyce green in kent, their track can be really soft or quite ruff on hot days. I think tire pressure can make all the difference.

My son did several years schoolboy MX culminating in a couple of years on a 250. We always used Michelins and the experience was good. We had a spare set of wheels so we could swap quickly for hard/soft terrain and we always had the other set as emergency spares in case of punctures.

For hard pack and stoney ground, MH3. For sand and mud, S12.

Brilliant tyres, 100% recommended.

15 psi normal running dropping to 8-10 if really soft.
