on my commute to uni today, I decided to do something which was smart but stupid.

by the time i arrived at uni, my hands were frozen. Its ice cold down here.

So I decided to put my hands on the exhaust pipe to warm them up.

All 4 fingers burnt.

Have a good day ¬.¬

A more sensible option, and something an instructor told me about, is to put your hands on the crank casing. The part that gets about as hot as a radiator, so the heat goes through your gloves to warm your hands. I've done this before I had heated grips and it helps immensely if you start to lose feeling in your fingers.

Crank case warmth Thumbs Up

While sat on the bandit i used to tuck my hands through the frame in above the engine and behind radiator, always nice and warm there. of course this may not work for you.

Heated Grips!

Or slightly cheaper less practical option:
Construct a large funnel which sits behind your engine around your carb with a couple of bits of 50mm dia hose coming off either side swooping round and coming back up to the handle bars where apon you terminate them in an appropriate manner as to distribute the warm air onto you Knuckles. Thumbs Up

Or waste £100 like me and wire some heated gloves to the battery. Mmm, nice Smile

That pic shows my insulated pipes quite nicely. They run from the back of the engine and blow warm air into my muffs..... Thumbs Up

I'm failing to see what's smart about sticking your frozen fingers on the exhaust, to me that's just pure, wepons grade, stupid...

Now, I know its a scooter, but, the new Aprilia Sportcity Actually has a heater of sorts (no, I don't have one)

It apparently channels heat from the engine and has 2 vents in front of your legs.

https://uk.aprilia.com/en-GB/Model/29815/SPORTCITY+CUBE+125/Overview.aspx

I thought it was a pretty novel/neat idea if it works.

I either put my hands (in my gloves, not bare) over the clutch and generator covers sometimes (generator side gets warmer on mine) and my hands are soon toasty.
If not I just take my gloves off and chuck them over the exhaust can. Never melted any or had any issues, just have to grin and bare the cold for the time being 'till the gloves warm up. Generally pockets do the job OK considering you don't have a wind blast, or at least, a significantly less one!
Bare hands on hot pipe - see first post Thumbs Up

I'd say the engine cases get as hot as the exhaust can on my bike after a couple hours riding, if not more so. The can cools very quickly after a ride too, where as the engine stays hot/warm for hours.

Still, bare hands? Dumbass Laughing I once touched one of my calipers after a ride, gloves on. Good thing too; They were binding and when I touched it my glove smoked Shocked

Not a new idea, the Gilera Runner had similar heat vents, they've been out a fair few years now.

I dont believe in heated grips or any other gadgets for your motorbike of that kind.

Thats the fun of riding, feeling the full experience.
I love the feeling after a long ride, you get home and your frozen.
Long as you core body and legs are kept warm!
Yes, it's a nightmare having cold hands while riding because after a while it does go numb and hard to ride.
But long as you have decent gloves, whats abit of cold!
Thats like saying you hate rain so you want a roof for your bike.

GET A CAR if you cant handle it!

By the time that I get home on the cold days, I'm almost glad to get off the bike Embarassed
