New misses came on the bike for the first time today, we went to the bike show at the excel. She was wearing an old Nolan lid I used as a kid circa 1996. The idea was to buy her a new one down there but she couldn't find one that she liked and fit better than the Nolan. Is it ok to keep using the Nolan? It is in excellent condition and has hardly been warn the lining feels really plush and nearly new. Would the age but you off using it?

It is hard to trust a word the manufacturers say when they have a vested interest in making you change your lid every 5 years and as far as I am aware there have been no independent testing of old helmets, everyone has an opinion but they are all equally unjustified because there is no decent research to back them up.

My opinion is that if it was up to 10 years and not heavily used I wouldn't think twice but 16 years is a long time. Worthy considering how has it been stored. In a windowsill for instance could be susceptible to UV damage, similarly if exposed to petrol vapours the polystyrene could be damaged.

New helmets don't need to be expensive, I personally would aim for a new one regardless of how good nick it is.

It was kept in a cupboard so pretty well still gonna look out for a new one I think. Tbh I'm pretty experienced with gear and if I didn't know would have no way of telling it was as old as it is. It is in much better condition that my 4/5 year old well used arai.
