Now this is a small rant, but i'd also like to know if anyone else has heard of this.

My little brother has just turned 17, and therefore has decided he is going to jack in his moped for a car. Fair enough. Now on his first ever lesson, first time behind the wheel of a car, the instructor took him on a dual carriageway doing 80mph. Firstly, wtf, i'm sure most of us just drove around small streets on our first lesson. But this isn't what i'm here to moan about.

She told my brother to look out on his left for BOB - Boy on a bike. Fair enough, children often use the road and are a hazard. But she also said to especially look out on his right for TOM - Twat on a motorbike.

Now i dont know about you, but i think this is just the sort of instruction new drivers need, they need to think that all motorcyclists are dangerous drivers and that we are just itching to be in drivers blind spots killing their kittens.

Bitch.

I would make it clear to her (through your brother of course) that he should make it aware that he was a biker once and totally finds the phrases very offensive. Try telling her what its like to be on a bike in the first place! I bet she has never ridden one!

And lastly yes my instructor took me out on the quiet streets to start with first. I think this instructor needs another lesson for her license to teach. I'm sure they have to follow a set procedure when you start with new drivers!

I would find another instructor, looks like a good case of getting themselves both killed

So she is breaking the law on a driving lesson, 80mph?

Apparently it is to get him used to over taking. Legally he shouldn't be overtaking anyone if they are going above the speed limit.

She is also teaching his GF, and after a week of lessons (about 4 or so hours I think) she things said GF is ready for her test, which is booked for a couple weeks time. Rolling Eyes

Sounds like a mental bitch. Probably a fat lezzer as well. Rat her out to the DSA.

Don't we all get taught that car drivers are mental and trying to kill us all on our CBT? I know I did, and every other post on here is the same.

I was also permitted to exceed the speed limit on my lessons while overtaking in order to reduce the time spent in the outside lane. Was told to do it on my test, and that the examiner would expect it.

If someone is doing 65, why creep past them at 70?

Does your little brother need you standing up for him? Whatcha gonna do, go out and give her a bollocking next time she takes him out?

Mr. Green

Everyone moans that "driving lessons are just to get you through the driving test, doesn't teach you anything about driving in the real world"

well maybe she's teaching him how everyone drives in reality, as well as the requirements of the test.

Thumbs Up

Standing up for him? He loves the fact that he got to go 80, and doesn't care about the TOM bit. But this thread is because I do.

Yes exceeding the limit is normal, but the thing I was highlighting was that it was on his first ever lesson, making it fairly inappropriate if you ask me.

Oh and we are taught to ride defensively, and like everyone is trying to kill us, for our own safety. It is the best way to ride. He doesn't need to learn to drive as if every motorcyclist is a twat and would be riding as such.

Her teaching style may not be the best, but at least she is teaching him to look out for bikes. I'd rather be a TOM than a SMIDSY any day.

But why 'twat'? Why not just motorcyclist? No problem learners being taught to look out for us, but this makes it sound like we're always in the wrong for potentially being in their blind spot.

Because I am Laughing

Joking aside, yes I agree with you. However I would rather her call me a twat than for her to not teach the student about me at all, which could make me a SMIDSY.

In the ideal world she would be saying "make sure to look out for motorcyclists", I concur.

For the millionth time...............

I very much doubt she went to 80mph

Dependant on the pupil she may have thought that the lad had shown enough gumpsion to be able to go on a Dual carriageway.

As for the TOM bit, Not something that I would have used as swearing in the car isn't the done thing,

Given that she was teaching a noob to carry as much kinetic energy as a group of six (6) bikes would into a similar illegal overtake, she's a foul mouthed hypocrite who sounds to be in dire need of a good punch + gary session.

You're getting offended on his behalf? How very Daily Mail.

If he doesn't care, why should you. It's big and ugly enough to choose his own instructor. Let him make his own choices.

Do car instructors need to be DSA approved? I thought that as long as you were qualified to supervise a learner (over 21 and license for 3 years), anyone could be a driving instructor.

I was taught that it's okay to exceed the speed limit while overtaking if necessary, but that you shouldn't begin an overtake knowing that you'd have to exceed the limit to complete it.

Not offended for him, I'm annoyed as a motorcyclist that this is what learners are told.

Oh and for the record I don't have a problem as such with the 80mph, just that it was his first ever time behind the wheel, so seemed a little much for a 17 year old who rides his 'ped as fast as it will go, everywhere.

This is what one instructor tells her pupils. It's not the end of the world. Also it's a mnemonic, designed to stick in the head rather than be taken literally.

I know Mr Ham, I'm not an idiot. But unfortunately, as well as the mnemonic, the word twat will forever be associated with biker.

No different to twat in cars. Wink

I was told to watch out for cars on my bike test.

Definitely remember my bike instructor(s) having a go at car drivers.

Also, my car examiner didn't like bikes, though he only made this clear after (he had questioned why I already had 'pink licence' at the start.)

My LGV examiner had a bike jacket on, but I didn't want to 'push it' too much, so didn't get in to a jovial conversation as he seemed to be the sort that wouldn't like me trying to ply his emotions Smile.

But I remember being told to watch out for cars etc. but not that car drivers were twats. I'm sure many of you know there is already a stigma attached to motorcyclists, so apparent 'professional drivers' reaffirming that isn't going to do any of us any good.

OT
1st driving lesson involved 50mph and smoking a fag.
Maintaining 50mph in this beast, and not dropping ash took some learning.

I think 'twat' would probably be one of the friendly terms used!

Amusingly, on one day one of the students was a cop (CID) - so when we got cut up, he said he'd make sure the relevant people had a word in the driver's ear.

Yes, it enforces a negative stereotype. But in the grand scheme, not something I'd worry about - it's one of many they'll hear.
