Can anyone tell me if i just done something daft.

I put new sprockets and chain on the bike at the weekend, but am now thinking maybe the split link on the chain has to go a certain way round.

I put the link in as follows... (hope decription is ok)
When looking at chain the open end of the link is to the front of the bike when link is top of chain.

Is this wrong and if so how bad... should I be riding the bike

Also if I have to replace the link can i use the same one or would I have to buy a new one.

Thanks for any advice.

Bren

The joy of a split link is you should be able to re-use it.

I normally put them on the other way round so the open end is not the end going forward when the chain is moving (if that makes sense).

Though to be honest I'm not sure if there is a right or a wrong way to put them on.

There is a right way to do it and thats not it. The open end needs to be at the back when on top (i.e travelling forwards) so that gravel etc. doesnt catch it and loosen/knock it off. You can re-use it so take it off and turn it round.

As McJam said, also with the open end facing the wrong way a sudden jerk in the chain could possibly slip it off, while with it the other way it will just be pushing into the closed end.
