So google is about to start taking and keeping more information than ever before.

What decent alternatives are there? Can I make firefox use a different search engine?

To use an alternate search engine, you can click on the Google icon up where it says "Google" in the search field in Firefox (not the address bar) and then select "manage search engines".

The main alternatives really are Bing, Yahoo and Ask, but there's others out there :-

For privacy, you might want to try DuckDuckGo - https://duckduckgo.com/

... I'm sure if you use Google Maps, you be able to look at the areas surrounding Goole and make your choices from that.

I was going to suggest Crowle. Close enough to goole but fewer smack-heads. Scunthorpe isn't too far away either should you want to lose the will to live completely.

In Chrome, go to Options | Basics | Manage search engines

First heard of DuckDuckGo (supid name, BTW) when using Mint 12, and now have it set as the default on all the machines I use.

Bah! there's nothing wrong with Scunthorpe. At least it's not in bloody Norfolk.

The clue is in the name... scunthorpe. And there's nowt wrong with Norfolk. Lovely people round here! Very family orientated... Wink

Oh and I'm a scunny bunny born and raised. Moved out of there when I was 18 (in other words, as soon as I was able to).

I remember using Alta Vista for many years but yeah, like above, Bing, Yahoo, Ask are the bigger ones.

I wasn't born or raised, but did spend my college years living there, as it was cheaper than travelling the 16miles each way from where I lived (and no, it wasn't in Goole!!) Laughing

Barton? I used to go there twice a month for a curry (mmm surma...) and drink in the mill or the george.

Or was it Gainsboro'? Nice little town actually, plus there's blyton for your ice-cream on the way to scunny.

Daemon... Yup... True scunthorpian through and through... Westcliff primary, priory lane juniors (only for year6), tommo and leggott. Lived just off wordsworth road for most of my pre-teen years and then we moved to peveril ave (just off glover road/lloyds ave) when I was 9. The beefeater (the queensway) was my local and I spent many a night in henry's (apparently now re-opened) and club2k. I think I'm still barred from "The Mint" (top end of the high street) and I once pulled a very underage girl in "The Britannia" (corner of froddy road and high street, across the road from Schnapps bar, oh and nothing beyond a snog happened, turns out she babysat the kids of someone I worked with at morrisons and she informed my of her real age, and I was only 17 at the time).

My aunt and uncle own a garage down on moorwell road and they opened up the scunthorpe speedway stadium back in 2004. I'm probably going to be popping up there at some point in the springtime to call in on my friends and family. I'll try and drop you a line if you're still in the grotty old town and treat you to a double cone at blyton.

Neither, but along the A15. Not far from Kirmington Airport. Went to school in Brigg, and North Lindsey college in Scunny. Went to Henry's nighclubbing. Thumbs Up

And Scunny Baths to see some cool bands. Cool

Ahh, that way out. I had a mate in howsham that I used to go see quite regular. Used to meet him at the little chef at barnetby top for breakfast.

My old man saw Def Leppard at baths hall a couple of times. The only decent group I saw there was a queen tribute at a college do... I think the band was called The Royal Family. All I remember is that they were bloody brilliant!
