First the simple solution. Want a pair of water cooling blocks, preferably the same but not massively important (probably) that need to cover 46mm x 46mm. I have one that will do but it has a step on the contact face so would need to be milled flat.

Otherwise can anyone suggest some decent priced models I can look into. I've seen some on eBay. Zalman zm-wb5 which are £30 each. I don't really want to spend that much as I'm only doing this for a bit of tinkering.

Or if not does anyone have access to a milling machine? I can Enquires about the cost of having a pair made the same. Obviously the same will be much better for the heat dissipation of the circuit and they would be the right size.

Could always try the local highschools/colleges (whichever has years 10&11) in your area. We had a milling machine at our school which we got to use Thumbs Up

Bet you could get the workshop technician, or a teacher, to quickly do it in exchange for some beer money Thumbs Up

If i was back on nights like i should be then i would of done them, can't do stuff on the side during the day Sad

If Jimspeed can't do it, try contacting a school like has been said, or contact the local technical college/engineering college, the technicians that work there will do it for nothing/a few beer tokens and they will demonstrate the machines to the students so thumbs up all round!

how small a cutter can you use for milling a copper block?

would you be able to cut 2mm runs and leave 1mm of copper between the runs?

it would probably be somewhere between 6-10mm deep.

trying to work out a drawing at the minute. overall sizes i think will depend on what sort cuts i can get. Ideally the more material left for the water to flow past means theres more surface area to pick up heat from.

also im wondering how to do the water runs. i could go back and forth along the same axis, the only downside being it will pick up more and more heat as it crosses the block.
or i could do a similar thing but with wider runs and more flow.
or start from the centre and run around in an expanding circles with a few runs.

I'm not sure what the smallest cutter I have is but will check tomorrow, I bought about 300 cutters in a joblot and they go from small to massive , would the cuts be blind on the ends or straigth thru from one end to the other (like you would do with a hacksaw say!)

They would be blind.

I'm thinking either long runs or cross hatching but not sure year. The run will have a direct flow and ensure full area coverage.

Also I'm thinking it'll be in two layers. The top layer just being like a lid with the holes for the pipe adapters.

One idea was something like this. Simple but possibly more machining?

There is more surface area for the thermal transfer though but you aren't 'directing' the flow so there may be areas that get less flow. Potentially.
