Just wondering really, does anyone know if the 2wd Ural combinations have either EC Whole Vehicle Type Approval or EC Small Series Type Approval?

Dave Angel at F2 would be the guy to ask.

You after one? Bare in mind they would be illegal to register in the UK.

Thats the point of the question really, it is likely that they are actually legal if they can be registered within another European country.

As far as I know right hand sidecars are still prohibited-whether any current coppers would even know to look is another thing.

https://www.f2motorcycles.ltd.uk/rhsidecars.html

I guess you could buy one, detach the sidecar, register it and then refit the sidecar later.

Unresolved grey area.
F2 are very 'anti' the RH Chair. Ural, 'list' them, but if you notice, the OTR prices are all for the one wheel drive Left-Hand Chair variants, the 'continental' 2WD outfits listed merely as 'available'.
I think that the UK 'rules' that effectively 'ban' them are NOT in contravention of EU law and the free-trade agreements.
Essence is that IF it can be registered in another EU country, it OUGHT to be legal to register in this one.... BUT
UK requires left dipping head-lamps and MPH marked speedos, for example... nothing stopping you REGISTERING a car or bike that has right hand dipping headlamp or KMH only speedo, but TECHNICALLY it wouldn't pass an MOT unless 'modified' to UK requirements, AND if its over 3 years old, you have to have an MOT to register.....
Last time I read F2's blurb on this; they mentioned fact that people would import & register as a 3-wheel 'car' providing an importers letter of conformity that the vehicle was 'new' hence gaining new vehicle MOT exemption... but after 3 years, vehicle needed an MOT which a strict examiner testing against requirements for a Trike, would have to fail, for reason of the asymetric headlamp if nothing else.
There's always ways to work in the margin, & having a sympathetic MOT man would be a good one; BUT, end of the day, is it really worth it for an unreliable, under-powered, over-weight, antique design 'Novelty Item'?
For what they now fetch, might as well buy a genuine Willy's Jeep... that's the cross country vehicle that won that war.... or save a shed load of money and experience the same frustration and trauma with a Series III Land-Rover!

I can't believe anyone would pay 10k plus for one though! Shocked

Urals were never really considered worth bothering with even when they were artificially cheaply available from under the iron curtain, what is it nostalgia value or what? Perplexing!

Surely you could put together a pretty reasonable sidecar combo yourself with a more modern machine for similar money or failing that get quite a nice car for your 10 to 12 grand's worth?!

Truthfully, the newer ones are very well made. The running gear is excellent and no japanese bike is really built for a decent chair any more.

I owned a Dnepr (similar machine built in the Ukraine) and they are heavy for a reason-to take the beating of going off road and carrying a lot of gear. Most of the gripes with these bikes came from the electrics, poor bearings in the motors and general poor finish from the factory. My Dnepr had a BMW engine. The BMW bit blew up the Ukranian bit never gave me any grief!
