Hey guys, not seen one of these on here before so here is what iv picked up from the forums so for:

Learnt:

- Chinese bikes are a complete no go
- What Insurance "Categories" mean, to an extent
- Looks can be deceiving, its what is under the fairing and what not
- What gear to buy, what to avoid, how to make sure it fits
- Which type of gear (leather or textile), it seems to be textile at moment
- Which bike i should opt for (CG125 or EN125 for my price)
- Little tips from reading stories, EG front brake contains about 70% of braking power?
- You dont have a Gear Indicator (not always anyway)
- Fuel Consumption is like 3* better than a car
- Insurance quotes would be about, 10 years on a bike = 1 year in a car under my own insurance Shocked
- Dont be afraid of falling off, or i will, ride safely and never be a dick
- LOOK WHERE I WANT TO GO, dont get distracted by mr wanker on his phone or other people walking by Cool

WHAT I NEED TO LEARN STILL

- How to ride the bike Laughing
- How bike mechanics work
- how to do bike mechanics myself
- how to know exactly what to look for when buying a bike
- a place local that can service my bike (manchester way preferably if anyone knows)

thanks so far guys!

A good tip to keep in mind is to keep your chain clean and lubed up, stops any problems later on Smile

Paying someone else to service your bike = You're going to be charged for someone kicking your tyre's, unscrewing a bolt, and screwing it back in, then opening a bottle of oil and pouring that back into the engine.

Getting a second pair of hands to help will be a good idea though, same with bleeding the brakes

There are loads of clips on YouTube that will help you with general servicing and maintenace.

They won't teach you to be a mechanic - but they will help to give you an idea of what's involved, and give you the courage to attempt some basic jobs yourself.

If you need some motivation, price-up the parts on eBay, then get a quote for the work from a dealer - then think about what you could spend the savings on!

Example - a full service on my Merc costs about £380 from a local independent Merc specialist, but I do it myself for just under £40.

If you keep all the receipts and a written record of the work done, this will add value at re-sell time.
