On my way home from work today I noticed my speedo has stopped working what is it likely to be and how much are new cables?

I think they are something like £10-15? dead easy to do (provided nothing has seized up)
Have had two change two on two different bikes, the core just wears out and snaps inside or at one end, the grease disappears fairly quickly i think, there is a such a thing as graphite lubricant for this sort of thing but i cant find any Sad

Yep, probably your speedo cable. I've broken three on my GPz. Laughing

Although one was kinda my fault for running over the cable. Doh!
