Been wondering what the penalties for this would be? Like the title states, merely curious. Doing a lot of messing about with the bike moving it off the drive and back onto the road with no lid (cos its like 20 feet of tarmac..).. what would happen?

You're going to fall and die. I call dibs on the girlfriend.

But in all seriousness, probably nothing; I mean who's going to see you. But if you do get caught then the worst that can happen is a FPN. Otherwise you may just get a copper that tells you to put your lid on.

So you'll be able to see the immediate area and check for Police before riding off, yes?

Where's the problem? Laughing

Maybe I'm a compulsive liar and by saying that, what I really mean is I want to ride the short distance to work helmetless in the summer. Wink

Hi

Suspect you would get away with it most of the time. But do it regularly and you are pretty certain to get done for it (and no doubt would soon get the police looking out for you).

And a face full of flies probably wouldn't be appealing either.

All the best

Every time a biker puts a helmet on in this country Fred Hill turns screaming in his grave. Come on now, it's upsetting the council gardeners.

Whilst I disagree with compulsory helmets, I can't really see why you wouldn't want to wear one? Wind in the eyes, bugs in the mouth/eyes, gravel in the face and your fragile noggin exposed to the road.

How about a piss pot? Satisfies the minimum legal requirements, takes a second or two to buckle and you can get all the bugs/stones and wind that your face can handle?

How does religion affect the law?
I don't get it, how can you have exceptions to the law because of a belief that is unrelated to motorcycling?

Maybe I should become a rasta so i can legally smoke weed... Or become a satanist so I can legally slaughter goats as sacrifice

Hi

Depends on the certification on it which I can't tell from the photo. However I suspect from the style it is a US helmet and doesn't comply with UK regulations.

All the best

Funnily enough, I was doing this yesterday, down my road, as I was trying to work out why my bike is acting very funny and I have to say it was super liberating. Amazing feeling! Even better in shorts in the summer, until you come off of course. Cool

The maximum penalty for not wearing a crash helmet during a crash is Death

Highway Code Rule 83

On all journeys, the rider and pillion passenger on a motorcycle, scooter or moped MUST wear a protective helmet. This does not apply to a follower of the Sikh religion while wearing a turban. Helmets MUST comply with the Regulations and they MUST be fastened securely. Riders and passengers of motor tricycles and quadricycles, also called quadbikes, should also wear a protective helmet. Before each journey check that your helmet visor is clean and in good condition.

[Laws RTA 1988 sects 16 & 17 & MC(PH)R as amended reg 4]

Don't bother protecting parts of your body that have no value Smile

So probably best to chuck out the helmet and get some decent advanced training done to ensure you have the very best protection - not crashing Wink.

What's bizarre is that he prefers to wear the bucket to the helmet on the front of the bars there.

I know it's purple but still....

Maybe the helmet was the wrong size - they do say an ill-fitting helmet can be dangerous in it's self!

I thought the regulations were just for the sale of helmets and that you could in fact wear one that 'could reasonably be expected to provide sufficient protection' or something similar?

James May has a good take on the helmet laws:
https://www.telegraph.co.uk/motoring/columnists/jamesmay/3128309/James-May-One-helmet-law-for-all.html

Trying to find the follow up article now...

<edit>
here it is - https://www.telegraph.co.uk/motoring/columnists/jamesmay/3173972/James-May-I-fought-the-law....html
