My bike has tipped over the 50k, I think its at about 52k now. It only cost me £500, but I would like to keep hold of it as it does the job and I really get on with it.

Anyway, the oil/filter were changed when I brought it a year ago (about 5k miles). It is off the road now SORN, MOT has run out, and now iinsurance I'm thinking of sorting it out now, then MOT'ing ect in June, so I effectively get 2 summers out of it.

Can anyone recommend a list of things I should aim to do while its off the road?

I'm thinking:

valve clearances
balancing the carbs
checking the pads
cleaning out the calipers
fork seals
cleaning the hagon and buying/making a shock sock.
change the rear tyre
oil/fuel filter
brake fluid
loob the ex-up

Have I missed anything?

Thanks, Nick

If the fork seals are fine don't replace them. Depending how long the shock has been on there it may need a rebuild, Fresh fork oil is always worth doing.

Id do a coolant flush too and at least check the plugs and re-gap or if they a pain to get too like my bike id just replace them.
Check air filter as well.
Also if you're checking the pads you might as well clean up the pistons and make sure none are seized, its quite common after winter riding.

+1 on the brake pistons - those blue spots work very well but only when clean; they like to seize up at the merest whiff of roadgrime.

Clean/check/lube the shock linkages and swingarm bearing? Depends how deep you want to go.

When were the plugs last changed?

Clean and regrease the swingarm and suspensions bushes/bearings.

Perhaps the same with the headstock.

Hi

Valves checks are not required that often on those engines, but at 50k there is a fair chance they have never been done and are well over due.

Spark plugs are a pain to change, but if you have it far enough apart to do the valve clearances I wouldn't hesitate to change them.

If you are concerned about the brakes then worth stripping and cleaning them, which means changing the fluid anyway. EXUP valve might be a git to remove to lube, and I would be careful that you don't shear a bolt off on it (and if you do, then take care you don't shear off a header bolt when removing the exhaust). Suspension linkages, steering head bearings, etc are worth stripping and greasing.

If you remove the swinging arm to grease the linkages and swinging arm bearings then I would consider replacing the EXUP cables while you are at it (think they go between the swinging arm and the engine with next to no clearance, so with the arm out changing them will be far easier).

Rest are basic service items. Oil change is already well over due by the sound of it.

All the best

Keith
