Posted: 14:56 - 07 Feb 2012 Post subject: New Motobatt, Use or Store? |
 |
|
The recent cold snap has run down my current Yuasa battery, so 2 months earlier than i planned i now have in my posession a new motobatt for the XT600E.
I can't decide if i should fit it while we have this cold weather or make do with the current battery which is weak but just about starting the bike above 0- C.
The Yuasa reads 12.6/8v with the engine off and about 13.8v with it revving...
If i do store it, whats the best place to keep a sealed gel battery? I was thinking a non-heated cupboard, sitting on a towel or two...
Am i just putting unnessecary strain on the reg/rec by running a weak battery? ____________________ [Current Bikes - GSXR-750 K5 & C90-97 ] [Previous Bikes: Runner 125, YBR 125, GS500, Bandit 600, Hornet 600, ZX6R-99, C90-99, R1-99, XT600E-04, GSXR-750 K4, CRF250L '16] |

Your current battery sounds like it's far from knackered. Go for a couple of long runs on the XT, and I reckon it'll recover without any problems. The Motobatt will be perfectly fine in a cupboard; you can put it on a couple of of towels if you want; I don't believe that it'll make any real difference in the long run. ____________________ '10 SV650SF, '83 GS650GT (it lives!), Questionable DIY dash project, 3D Printer project, Lasercutter project |

How far are you riding each day?
On the old yamms the charging systems were very powerful so it might be if you are doing lots of short journeys that it'll need a charge every now and again.
The motobatt will be fine stored in liquid nitrogen, they are bullet proof.
If you can though, charge it up and keep it in doors. If not just leave it in a garage and it won't cause to much problem. ____________________ CBT Passed: 30/08/2009, Theory Passed: 31/08/2010, Mod 1 Passed: 6/9/2010, Mod 2 Passed: 13/09/2010. Restriction ended 13/09/2012.

I have just done what you are proposing but mine was due to starting problems which turned out to be down to a bolt
My Yuasa seemed to drain pretty quickly when only doing short journeys so went ahead and changed it. I also have just fitted a Philips Extreme Power bulb for the headlight so didn't want to use a dodgy'ish battry so changed.
Personally I would just go for the change. The Motobatt will go for years so putting it in a few months early wont hurt. |

No problems running around town today with the varta, it just feels like its 10-20secs cranking time away from flat...
Will probably put the motobatt in this week.. ____________________ [Current Bikes - GSXR-750 K5 & C90-97 ] [Previous Bikes: Runner 125, YBR 125, GS500, Bandit 600, Hornet 600, ZX6R-99, C90-99, R1-99, XT600E-04, GSXR-750 K4, CRF250L '16] |

Motobatt batteries are utter rubbish lol
There are loads of decent brands out there and they ain't one of them. Clever idea, but made in China for cheap means they are shiite!!
Unibat, Varta, Yuasa, Dynavolt, etc and they are all good battery manufacturers.

Please tell me where you got this information from?
Talking complete shit mate. Motobatt gel batteries are thee dogs danglies when it comes to motorbike batteries. Please tell me what other battery you know after 8 months is still like 40% charged or can crank a v8 over 50 times with no problems at all.
Make sure you actually know what you're talking about before you post. Thanks. ____________________ CBT Passed: 30/08/2009, Theory Passed: 31/08/2010, Mod 1 Passed: 6/9/2010, Mod 2 Passed: 13/09/2010. Restriction ended 13/09/2012.

Lol so because one guy on the 125 forum thinks they are shit automatically you think they are shit?
I'll dig out the thread in ameerica where they test them (although I think someone has linked it in the other thread for me). I've never heard a bad review of them and still haven't as that guy won't disclose hois reaons so will stick to my original answer above.
Good to see they think you are a valuble, contibuting member over there too ____________________ CBT Passed: 30/08/2009, Theory Passed: 31/08/2010, Mod 1 Passed: 6/9/2010, Mod 2 Passed: 13/09/2010. Restriction ended 13/09/2012.

The main chap who does know a fair bit about a fair bit is reluctant to elaborate online for whatever reason ..
If lots have bought them and had no issues over time, then is a tad confusing for him to say their shit.
Hence the hijack and etc .. which has resulted in no clear info being laid ... meh. ____________________ Jogging on, destination living. |
