I dunno if it's more dangerous to read and do without instruction or not. I'm sure TC can let us know what he thinks

but it's good to see more people prepared to keep on learnin' Cool Cool

It's definitely worth a read.

Idealy it's probably best to do one chapter at a time and try to absorb and practive those techniqes for a week or so of riding, so it becomes a bit more instinctive.

To be honest, you can read and learn without tuition as long as you really read it properly and keep practicing.

I read Twist of the Wrist 2 when I was off the road over XMAS (no bike!) and have just started re-reading it slowly chapter by chapter and making sure I understand it.

My riding has improved and I'm a lot faster now, but I noticed yesterday and today that I unconsciously look around more and do lifesavers without even thinking about it, so I feel I'm a lot safer now than I was before, even though TOTW 2 doesn't cover that sort of riding! I think it's just that when you learn your bike and riding better, you have more concentration to spend elsewhere , i.e. observation etc.

To be honest, I personally feel I have a /lot/ to learn still and I doubt I'm going to get that from a book. I'm about to buy the police road craft book, will read it a few times and start putting it into practice, then I plan to get onto the bike safe courses then some advanced riding.

But books are good in my opinion.

The current Roadcraft is a much better read than the old blue book that i had to learn many years ago, and the features of the system are much better now in that it is simply Information, position, Speed, gear and acceleration rather than the old features which took a week just to cover the first phase Wink

Although the book will give you the basics, it is open to misinterpretation, so be a little careful that you don't take everything on board literally unless you are having some instruction to support your reading, but enjoy it and learn from it all the same.

I think I have mentioned before, don't go on a Bikesafe thinking that you are going to learn advanced riding. Firstly they cannot teach you in one or two days all there is about advanced riding, and secondly most of the Police who do bikesafe are not qualified instructors. If you do a Bikesafe treat it as an introduction to the principles of advanced riding, or more to the point treat it as a dangled carrot hopefully tempting or inviting you to do more and do a full course! Wink

The blue book I refer to is the original Roadcraft that ran until about 1998 and was then replaced by the new book.

However, I think there have been three cover changes, Green, Blue and now Yellow.

Don't worry though, the contents hasn't changed, the next re-write is not due for another few years Wink
