Hi guys, have just got my hands on a nice little XJ600 which is more or less perfect except for the paint is a bit flaky and poor in parts so am looking to spray her up and get her looking sweet again Smile

Problem is, I've narrowed my choice down to three colours but just can't decide between them and was wondering what the great wide world would have to say Very Happy

The original is there for reference only really but have been considering a really metalic deep blue, so call that one blue for arguments sake.

Anyways, thoughts? Ideas?

Home resprays almost always look shit.

Add that is a 90's commuter bike into the mix and I'd say save your money and just ride it.

If you insist on spraying it then just embrace the crapness and spray it matte black.

Well I'll be getting my mate to spray it in his spray booth so it wont be a half-arsed home job, it'll be a proper strip down job and a professional respray - frame & panels as well as handle bars, forks and wheels powder coated.

So for the cost of some paint (less than 20 odd quid) and beers for me mate, it's worth getting it done and having a decent looking bike imo.

Fair enough, go with something in keeping with the age and design of the bike then.

Yellow and white despite being my favourite colours for bikes wouldn't look right, the panels would look out of place on the bike.

To suit the bike it would need to be understated, like a neat gloss black or dark blue.

I like the KR paintjob.

If its one colour however have you considered british racing green with a thin gold or silver pinstripe?

I feel somewhere along the lines of a black, or a shade off it

It looks like a nice commuter bike tho mate

but realistically, its all down to the riders opinion Very Happy

The Kenny Roberts Competition Yellow & speed-Stripe has, unfortunately been done to death; frequently badly, and is an unfortunate 'cliche' that IF you are going to do it, you HAVE to do it REALLY well. And the trouble is, I don't think that the rather 'concervative' styling of the Divvy would take it.
It hasn't got the butchness of an old muscle bike, to take such a bold statement. Think that they put a 'tribute' livery on an XJR13 too, and though I dont recall Yam having a big-bore four to line up against the Kwak Zeds in the 'big-bore' superbike era, Kenny had switched to the GP bikes by then anyway...
So on a small bore divy, KR scheme would be on a loosing streak from teh start, and no matter how well you did it; it risk would be that it looked uninspired and 'just' trying to ape the XJR.

The styling is subtle and concervative; factory recognised that and kept the factory liveries subdued.

Idea of something subtle in BRG, 'fits' with that... but could be a tad 'too' subdued and not enough to be 'different' from factory liveries.

Factory did a number of liveries with colour matched frames; think red and silver... and seen a number of tarted up divvies that have done likewise, or used contrasting colour frames; eg white frame red body.

Again, its an oft done cliche, and to make it work you have to do it well, and get the colours to work together.

Back to the yellow; starting renovation of my DT, the KRR 'cliche' was a bit of a conundrum. I tried some cheap Plasticote Yellow to see what it might look like and looked at pics of as MANY yellow Yamaha's as I could....

The actual Yamaha Competition Yellow is actually quite an incipid lemon yellow, and I realised that it was the black and white speed-striping that lifted it out of the 'bland'.

Many repainted bikes to try and get a more striking effect without 'good' decals, had tried using mush stronger yellows, neons or day-glow...

I actually bought my VF after being blinded by the radio-active glow of an FZ700, that had been painted in a ghastly KRR tribute paint scheme, badly with actually phosphorescent yellow paint that cast a kind og green hue around the thing!

So I ended up plumping for the slightly richer custard yellow I used, and keeping the Decals subtle but 'period' to the bike.

And Decals MAY be the 'key' to making or breaking the final effect, and making something that looks really 'pro' and tastefully customised, rather than just 'tarted up'.

Personally, having had good results with the silver in teh Decals Corf has made up for me, and a silver 'sparkle' powder coat; I think I might just be tempted to go for a silver or at least 'aluminium effect' silver and green 'scheme'.

Probably not a true British Racing Green, but something deeper, a nice 'candy' bottle green might work well; with sparkle silver powder coated frame and fork-sliders, and a Triumph-esque silver over red tank-flash and white YAMAHA emblem.

End of the day though, its your bike, and if you are going to do a 'Custom' paint finish, has to be YOUR taste and your ideas...

BUT... difference between a 'Custom' and a 'tart-up' is that consideration, imagination & avoidance of cliche's!

Imagination is all up to you; all I can do is point out the common cliches and suggest thinking about decals to 'lift' it from the average blow over 'tart'up'.

All yellow is a factory colour and I think looks good on a diversion,

That or basic black, Seca 2 style (minus the stickers)

Hmm, Ive sprayed a few of my bikes over the years and found it was soo much hassle you should ring my mate MARC at DRPW and Im sure he could paint that for you for probably only a tiny little bit more than what it would cost you and in any colour you can think of.

MikelCFC off here got his done in a turn around of a week.
