Would a steering dampener be a good idea for a beginner rider? Does it make the bike safer or must the bike be pushed towards it's limit before it really begins to work? Thanks for the help!

They're only needed on the more flighty sports bikes. They're not needed for 125's at all.

How about a 2002 R6? A little bigger than a 125... ;-)

R6's are known to be a bit on the flighty side and some people do recommend dampers for them. Although if you're a new rider you won't be pushing the bike hard enough to really need one.

Yes, get one.

THe r6 /is/ a very twitch bike.
If it's set up fairly firmly then you can get some quite nasty slappers.

A thing to remember about them;
Don't try to fight it, this will just transfer it to the rest of the bike.
Usually you need to /power/ out of them not brake out of them.

You probably won't really notice it until you start to /really/ push the bike on the road, but it probably is worth it anyway.

As mcjam said,,,,,,,,,,when first getting the r6 u prob won`t need it.
But once ya confidence and experience with the bike progresses, and u get quicker i would invest in one.
Tank slappers are not very nice and can frighten ya.
Also having the bike set up suspension wise will help a bit also.
I had a hyperpro steering damper on my r6 which hubby also had on his previous r1.
I personally found this a very good steering damper. My hubby liked his stunts and his bike took some bashing and the damper helped many times.
I also used to ride the r6 very hard and on uneven roads it can be very all over the place.
So i would keep an eye out for one while yr getting used to the bike.
Enjoy and ride safe.
I had the 2002 model grreat bike.
How long ya had it then.?

well enjoy it.
Take it easy on it at first,,,,,i found the turn on the r6 was the hardest bit to get used to,but got there in the end.
Enjoy nice bikes to ride,,,,,,,,and there are lots of peeps around with r6`s so just ask any quests if ya not sure about something.
ride safe

Hee hee, I got some tank slappers on my mini moto. Fell off a few times, but hey, it was fun.

Anyway, do any of you lot know of a supplier of a damper for a zxr400?

Thanks
Needa
