Right, i bought my first bike (1985 Honda CG125) about 2 weeks an have slowly been taking it to bits to get it to run

there are a few parts missing which im in the process of tracking down etc

the paint is scabby so ideally it needs powder coating or spraying which will cost at least £100

So, i bought the bike for £200,

it needs -

tyres - £60 ish

centre stand - £30 ish

miscellaneous - £50

I'm happy to get parts for it to get it road legal but is it really worth getting it sprayed/ coated?

realistically i cant see the bike being worth more than £300 - £400 tax an test?

what do you all think?

just fix it til its road legal an use it

or

go the full hog, strip it coat it an marvel in all its shininess?

It may well be worth a bit more shiny as the cg tends to hold it's value ok, but personally I'd do what I could as cheaply as possible. Maybe sand down and paint over any bits of obvious rust etc.

A side stand is find - you don't need a centre stand.

Thanks G

i think i will do as best i can, as cheap as i can - if that makes sense

I'm just worried that i will be shell out 300+ but the bike would never be worth anything like that

i think i will just patch her up

is it not an MOT failure if it has no centre stand?

thanks!

This would be my personal preference to start with; after a couple of weeks using it you may find other things that need attention that requires spending on it. Once you're sure it's running solidly, then plan a tartup session.

No, you don't need any stand at all - I've had a few bikes MOT'd that don't have stands.

Plenty of bikes only have side stands by design.

My bike has no centre stand Thumbs Up

I quite like using the side stand, it's quick and easy. I also disable the side stand switch so that I can warm the bike up whilst gearing up, then ride off immediately.

Centre stand is nice for chain oiling and tensioning though. Plus the bike sits more upright, so better for small garage spaces etc.

What do you mean disable the side stand switch so you can gear up and ride off straight away? You can have the engine running with the sidestand down, the switch only makes it cut out when it's put in gear. Well, certainly how my bikes have been.

If it were I, I'd decide whether I was going to be keeping it for a fair while or whether I'd be outing it soonish. If I were keeping it, I'd do it properly and then know I've got a sound bike which is going to stay in good nick etc for the time I own it. If I were thinking of knocking it on fairly shortly then I'd spruce it up to a budget and sell it off in working order.
