Hi guys/girls,

Well its that time of year again in which i need to renew my motorcycle insurance in the next few weeks.

Dont know about you but.. WOW the prices are ridiculous. My insurance has doubled in the space of 12 months! Even with being a year older and a extra years NCB.

Im now 20 and have 4 years no claims and the cheapest i can insure the ducati 748 for is £800! last year it cost less than £500.

Speaking to a few people at insurance places a fair few insurance schemes have stopped and some companys have pulled out of the bike insurance business all together leaving the market with out the same competitiveness.

Anyone else has the same problem? Also reccommend any insurance companys to try?

Atm im close to deciding to sell the 748 and buy a ZX6R which is a group lower on insurance and should save me nearly £300.

Insurance in general is going up by staggering amounts.

The best way to try and get the premium down is to go on all the comparison sites. Thebikeinsurer, GoCompare, Comparethemarket, Confused, etc, I go and do them all. And when I get the lowest priced insurer's quote, I go directly to their website and do the quote again, and usually it comes out cheaper. The comparison sites say you can't beat their quotes by going straight to the insurer, but their websites don't always tick the right boxes when getting quotes.

The other things you can do are fiddle with your job title. For example, if you're an administrator, quote on "Administration Assistant" and "Administration Clerk" as well. Reducing the mileage on your quote can also lower the premium.

One thing I've never tried is insuring an older rider, because nobody else in my family rides. It works well with car insurance, so if someone else in your family rides, put them on the policy as a named rider and it should reduce the premium.

thanks for the reply, iv tryed all of those.
on compare the market my quote went from £1100 to £9000 when i added my dad on the policy (whos 57!).

Iv tryed everything and every comparison site.

Makes you feel empty, one of my favourite pashions just looked like it became unaffordable.

Yup, Equity Red Star got caught under-under-writing and bailed out (or put their prices way up), I think they were holding down the bottom end of the market.

My quotes crept up marginally this year even with another year's NCD, but only by a few £££. I can only suggest getting older, at 39 with 3 year's NCD I was getting (just for larks) TPO quotes in the £80 range on an R6 (garaged, 6000 miles, Almax, immobiliser and Datatag listed).

Oh, bike value is likely a factor, you may want to consider going older and cheaper. I haven't had a bike worth 4 figures yet.

Do you honestly get all this insurance bullshit in another country, for example the USA? It just seems the UK is an expensive, redtape place to live!

I couldn't even of dreamed of owning a bike like that when I was 20.
Give you an example.
When I was 19, I bought a Honda 250 Superdream that cost me £800 new, and £400 to insure TPFT
In todays money that's about a grand, and to insure a low powered slug of a bike.
Sorry but I don't think you new young riders have much to moan about.

My GSX-R would cost me £6800 to insure if I didn't have a tidy little (legal) loophole that allows me to ride it legally and insured for <£500.

At 19, with a year's NCB (two come April), it still costs me around £500 TPFT to insure an SV650S and well over £1400 to insure a sports 600.

For comparison, my father insures a few 20-odd ton lorries, 2 cars, 3 motorbikes, a van and is covered to drive basically anything that is already insured for £2100 a year.

Insurance is just going up and up on a daily basis now it seems. Sad.

I agree with that point above about not having much to moan about on a sports bike at a young age.

Myself on my not so sporty GS 500, last years insurance was 291 tpft, this years renewal was close to 700..

Comparison sites got the same insurer in at around 500 but I went with the cheapest quote of 192.

You done all the ringing around?

This is a few year's old, but the UK may be the 3rd most expensive place to live.

Last I checked, some silly number like 75% of the income of every person in this country goes back to the Government in taxes, compared to around 40% in the USA if I remember right.

It does seem that the UK is just an incredibly expensive place to live. I am glad we have compulsory insurance, if only it was a bit cheaper.

He's probably a named driver on daddies policy so he is insured on most things, if they're added to the policy.

I only called it a loophole because I don't know what else to call it.

I have a bike I own, worth a couple hundred quid, which I insure and it gives me ride other motorcycles, costs a couple hundred quid to insure.

My father/mother insures the GSX-R for £50 due to having millions of NCB and I can then ride it for a heck of a lot less that normal. Yes, it is TPO, but that is only when I am riding it, any other time (including when it is parked when I am using it, just away from the bike) it is covered by the Father's fully comp policy.

It works out well. Saves us a couple grand a year haha. It is not named driver/rider, it is separate policies so I build up no-claims bonus and get a huge discount from it.

Also it means that we can both ride all the bikes we own, so we don't have to worry about having several policies, just one each. Thumbs Up.

I'm insured with Wicked Quotes (Equity Red Star though I believe has changed to Rameses) and my F/C insurance on my Street Triple as a 23 y/o with 3 years NCB and 3 points for speeding went up by a massive £10 (£540 - £550). Seems to be a decent company, not much info on them though (other than they're based in St Albans), then again I've not had to claim from them. Beat MCE by several million miles in general customer service too.

May be worth a look...

once again cheers for the replys.

Paulington thats a very good idea, my dad does have a bike lisence and i own a laverda 650 which should be pretty cheap to insure so ill look into it.

I just went to wicked quotes and they wouldnt quote me but may phone me back.

Cheapest quote iv had on a decent bike was £500 for a ZX6R 2005, which is pretty much the same power as the 748 and nearly 35KG lighter! So ill keep my eye out for a decent c1h.

Just had my renewals through. Two hundred quid for the CBR and ninety eight pounds for the RVF. Seems a bit pricey so I will be shopping round this year. Thumbs Down

Might be as well to get out of the habit of calling it "your" Gixxer, eh?

Do be sure that you have your stories straight if you have an off and the insurers compare the names and addresses then ask you - and maybe the neighbours - exactly how often you ride "daddy's" bike. They do this for a living, remember, they're not going to be fooled for a second.

Also, pretty sure all the policies I've had with use of other bikes stipulate that the bike you're riding third party must be equal or less capacity than the bike you're insured on.

I'd check the small print.

Am also with them because they gave me the cheapest quote by far. So far had nothing to complain about, have changed address with them and it took one phone call, policy docs were e-mailed through less than 24 hours later, all free.

I paid for it, thank you very much. Every single penny. I may not work in the conventional sense but I do enough for the business and other people which, when combined with the compensation I got from my second accident, was enough to buy it.

Therefore, it is mine. Not a penny of my Father's or Mother's money went into it. It may be registered in his name, but that is only because of the way our insurance works. He bought the Virago, which is in my name. Just because it's in his name doesn't mean he owns it.

It's totally legal for me to do, there is no clause saying how often I can ride a bike that isn't registered in my name. In reality I use different bikes on different days so even if they did check our CCTV which I HIGHLY doubt, they'd see I do not use it every day.

Also, no need for 'stories', as I said, it is legal. I know full well that if I bin it whilst I am riding it, I won't get a penny for it as it's TPO, but that's a risk I'm willing to take when the alternative is an extra £6000 on the insurance premium

Instead of making wild assumptions about what you think you know, why not ask me? If I didn't pay for that bike and you asked me if I did, I'd have told you. Much nicer to ask and get the truth.

Hey Garth,

I've checked the small print and even rang them, they have told me there is no cc restriction and there is no horsepower restriction. It is standard ride other bikes, allows me to ride the bike owned by someone else as long as it is insured by them and I have their consent.

Do so Blutonium, it can help quite a lot. Just remember, when you ride it you will only be insured TPO so, as above, if you drop it/have an accident you won't get anything for the bike/your injuries unless you can claim off the other person.

Cheers!

You are fronting.
Your insurance covers you to ride bikes you don't own, but you have admitted you own the other bike.
As you correctly say, just because your father's on the V5 doesn't mean he owns it - you own it, hence your insurance isn't valid.

Probably best to keep your mouth shut if you're doing this kind of fraud, rather than boast about it. And no, it's not legal - if you dispute this, go and tell your insurance company exactly what you've told us and see how long your cover remains valid for!

i got my renewal through at the end of February and started geting quotes as renewal was £100 more than last year.

All the prices were a minimum of £70+ more than last year, so i waited and got a quote on the 1st of March and got quotes a lot less...

Last year my insurance was £166
renewal was £260
Feb quotes were £240+
1st of March £144

It could be worth while waiting till the start of April and re-quoting, if they stil go up you still have your reference number for the march quote.

Someone once said to me that insurance prices are a bit cheaper at the month beginning as it helps the companies hit their targets, once they have hit them they pump them up a bit later in the month as they have their quota and so are just after more money?
