This is a subject that those who are 'financially challenged' might dwell upon. To stop myself from stalling, I often dream about my next bike. I've just had to sell my near mint 93 Blade and replaced it with a usable 92 gixer 750 wn for ££reasons. Bad comedown I know, but I had to do it, and as yet see nothing but a struggle to keep it on the road due to lack of £££'s. I like the gixer, but the sooner I can move on, the better. Was thinking of a 98 carburettor R1, but after listening, watching and appreciating the advantages of a more 'rideable' 750cc bike, I'm now thinking of a K7 Suzuki gsxr 750. Has anybody owned these two bikes? What do you think? I can't see my desire passing either of these bikes at the moment, but rather than spend a fortune on bike and insurance without a clearer picture of what I want, I will get another old Blade or a carburettor 750 SRAD on Classic bike insurance. Likewise, is anyone in a good position to compare, a 96 Blade, with a 96~7 750 SRAD?? Love to hear any comments. PS~ We're all pals here! Can anyone lend me £2000? Ta! Twisted Evil

Coincidence, or a troll?

Two very different bikes to compare.
Price wise, as well as age, size and style.

Just thought this was a bit of a weird post, as I've got a 98R1, and Luke has a K7 750, and last night, we were talking about which would be the faster bike. Laughing

If you can afford it, go with the 750 all day long! Purely because it's nearly a decade newer!

The 98R1 is probably the best bang-for-your-buck bike in the litre class though, and they are the undisputed modern classic too. Wink

In fact, the K7 is well out of my reach!! Far future maybe, but next windfall might fetch an SRAD or 98 R1. The attraction to the k7 are the numerous road tests which all find the the bike fitting all the testers demands. I might see if my local Suzuki dealer will let me test ride one Twisted Evil

Prefer the look of the K8 onwards bike myself, and given the choice I'd probably take the R1 as it's more of a cult bike.

I'd go with a CG125 over an SRAD.
They were nice about 10 years ago. Not now.
Havent aged well at all IMO, look like moon ships.
I've had a go on a few, and they dont ride that nice either.

Have to agree with binge, I had a go on an SRAD 600 and didn't think much of it compared to my speed four.

Make you look like a chav as well.

I've had both an SRAD and R1 in the past and there is no doubt the R1 was more 'involved'. it's a much more aggressive bike that tends to spend most of it's time pointing skywards, it's also a proper headshaker on rough roads when it's pinned in the lower gears.

The only decent SRAD was the early TL1000R SRAD. Wink

Can't say tbh i've never had the chance to ride one yet, i did fancy one though a while back due to the legendary status but fear it will be much like the ShitRAD 6.

it was the TL1000S that had the bad rep due to a dodgy rear shock, if i remember correctly t was nicknamed the widowmaker - the TL1000R is actually a nice bike to ride, but doesn't feel as 'sharp' compared to modern day sportsbikes...saying that i'd still have one.

I quite like SRADs.

I might buy a cheap 6 one day.

The nickname "Widdowmaker" has been attached to loads of bikes over the years. Way before the time of the TLR / TLS. But yeah, it was the S which was the proper head shaker.

IIRC, both the S and the R had a factory recall or something along them lines, for dampers to be fitted.

Wicked bikes either way! Very Happy

For what it's worth, destroyed a 2010 R6 today ridden by my mate who's a capable rider and that R6 pulls effortlessly on an original 'blade we was also with. I'm pretty confident the K7 750 will out-pull a 98 R1 easily enough.

98 r1's are making about 140 bhp with an exhaust and dynojetted. They weight about 20kgs more then a k7 750. The 98 r1 should win in a drag race if both bikes have the same mods as each other.

Give it a week, Luke and I will try it out in real life.
Id say, we're quite similar in rider skill, and rider style to a certain extent.
His K7 is midly tuned, my R1 is mildly tuned etc.

From my recolection, Suzuki re-invented the morris minors lever-arm damper, & it was as roundly slated as being 'hopeless' on a 100+bhp motorcycle as it was on a 40bhp car!
Not sure that the rear damper was the 'problem' that made the bikes a bit wobbly when new; they were quickly fitted with a steering damper on factory re-call, though, which if I remember correctly was due to a number of frames snapping.....
Argument remains as to why!
But issues are likely to be connected.

Biggest worry with them, though was that so many were parallel imported, and not registered by Suzuki UK, missed the recall notice and free frame replacement / steering damper upgrade.

Second hand prices plumeted on them, and five years ago they were almost being given away compared to the Honda's.

A mate had one....... he thought it was a real bargain!

Sold it to some chap who had daft ideas of Turbo-Charging it.... wonder if it was a relative of CHR15 Shocked

Lol!~~~ Response to my initial post has been very good, but a little competition will make it about 100%! Mmm. CAn I have the winning bike aswell? Twisted Evil It's a pity about the 'common faults' which have come with many Suzuki models. Another was te Gixer 1000 k6 which had to be recalled to have 'braces' put under the steering yolks. Apart from these faults, they have what many consider to be a more integrated package on their sports bikes. You can see the problems with 'finish' on many old Suzuki's when you have to work on 17~18 yre old ones. Fortunately the engines are the best bit. Twisted Evil
