Struggling to find much info on the net.

Anyone have a rough idea how much a leaded head conversion would cost for a 2 valve per cylinder twin?

Also where is good? Somewhere in Essex would be Ideal.

You want to take out hard valve seats and replace them with soft ones that require unleaded petrol? Confused

I had a car head reconditioned and converted to unleaded at Cambridge Rebores about 5 years ago. Cost about £150, which included new valves and guides. That was for an 8 valve cast iron head.

Little bit of a trek from Essex, but not too far depending on where in the county you are.

Hi

If for a bike worth asking SEP possibly:-

https://www.sep-kegworth.co.uk/page1.htm

To be honest if it were for a limited use bike I would just use one of the fuel additives until such a time as the seats needed attention anyway.

All the best

Keith

The seats need attention, Laughing it was ran with no additives for a 1000 miles or so.

Yeah a TR6 Trophy.

It's my Dad's he bought it a while ago he thought the guy had said that it had had a leaded conversion but he doesn't think he did now. It conked out and refuses to run, I made a new years resolution that I would get at least one of his bikes running this year, it annoys me he has 2 knackered but complete bikes sitting in the garage. I think this will be easier than the CX500 that hasn't turned a wheel in 10+ years.

Surely you want an unleaded conversion rather than leaded?

Probably a nicer ride as well Laughing .

If the head is coming off for an investigation it might well be worth doing them irrespective of condition. But as said surprised they have gone with that little (presumably) fairly light use.

Quick Google found this (no idea if they are good or bad), which suggests the ball park figure is around £100.

All the best

The CX is actually reasonably nice (looking) my dad has owned it since it was about a year old (31 years this weekend) It's never been running since I have been riding and I would really love to have a go on it. I am not entirly sure what he said was wrong with it. I think it is something electrical like the points, it cuts to 1 cylinder when it is wet. I seem to remember my dad saying it was an engine out job to fix.

It is completely original and I think it has less than 40,000 on the clock.

The only picture I can find.

It is has a load of sentimental value, this is what made me love bikes, I used to wait for my dad to come home on it he would stop at the end of the drive way and I would come running out in a skanky old helmet that was approximately 16 sizes too big for me and jump on the back to ride pillion the 30 yds to the garage. Laughing

I love that plastic maggot. Laughing

I would surmise that it is not a valve seat failure but some other problem.

If the valve seats had receeded, the tappets would have kept closing up and you'd lose compression. It would almost certainly come on gradually with a steady loss of compression, an increasing tendancy to pop and bang on the overrun and blueing of the header pipes.

By all means get hardened seats done but I'd have a carefull look first because your problem almost certainly lies elsewhere.

After 1000 miles, there would probably still be quite a bit of lead/substitute hanging about. I also know people with much older brit bikes who say the whole conversion thing is a waste of time and just carry on running them in standard trim on unleaded.

Easy enough to check anyway. Exhaust valve seat recession should be easy to see if you whip the head and valve off.

SRM will charge you £94.82 + VAT to fit hardened exhaust valve seats to a Triumph twin. A good friend had a lot of serious tuning work done by them on his A65 and it was top quality. I have personally been overtaken by it while I was flat-out on my GPZ500.
