https://www.gumtree.com/p/cars-vans-motorbikes/cb900/97312519

Just found this while having a nose round Gumtree. I'd have it if I had time to even think about doing something with it. Wouldn't bother me that I wouldn't know where to start, wouldn't be in a rush to sort it out and would have it as a project to learn about bikes.

Thought i'd throw it out there as it's cheap and it might appeal to someone here.

What's so bad about that? (I don't know anything about them)

Just thought I'd stick it on here as people are usually looking for cheap project bikes, what major dramas are there likely to be?

Is it easy to get parts for?

I have a vague memory of bits of the inside of the engine making a break for freedom by exploding through the outside of the engine.

I think they did like to launch rods through blocks, but they needed to be provoked, usually by missing gears at high revs.

Seem to remember chocolate cams and chains being a bigger issue, with the chain wearing it's way through various internal parts.

It's got to be worth that to break, but it would be nicer if it was saved; probably wouldn't cost that much to do, if you spent the next couple of months scouring the net for cheap bits.

I actually gave the bloke a bell half hour ago, someone was looking at it at the time. He gave me a call back the guy didn't want it.

I have said if it's still there on Wednesday I'll go have a look.

To be honest, it wont make a difference me looking at it, I can see it's a heap from the photos lol. I'm going to be far too busy for the next 12 months at least to do anything to it but could buy bits here and there and it's not going to do it any harm sitting in the garage for another year.

very tempted, even if it takes 5 years to finish would be something good to do. Can piss 150 quid up the wall drinking in one weekend so there's worse things to buy.

Ooooh, looked at the pictures properly now and that is a bit of a mission.

Still, piece of piss to work on and I doubt there's much you can't buy for it; if you can afford to tuck it away and collect parts for it, then, as you say, there's worse things to spend 150 quid on.

Would be nice to see it standard though, too many of them have been bastardised and generally buggered up.

yeah would be a mission but as i'd be in no rush i wouldn't allow it to stress me out, would be good to learn a bit about bikes at the same time. Might as well learn on something that cheap, if i bodge it to the point of no return it won't be a big deal.

If I get it Wednesday, i'll update here.

Bit harsh there JJ, there's worse things you could buy as an entree to rebuilding bikes in general and 80s heavyweights in particular, no?

Have to agree with JJ there, waste of money unless you are an absolute masochist.

If you are going to do a project, at least choose a bike that's desired. Those Hondas were pants, really.

Compared to what?

Z1000J?

GSX1100E?

XS850?

By modern standards, they were all pretty shit, but when it comes to getting bits, it's a toss up between the Honda and the Kwak as to which is easier.

Also, try and find any of the other three, in anything like complete condition, for 150 quid.

Certainly compared with the Kawasakis of the era.

Suzukis, I can't say but Kwaks are the ones to go for (except the Honda 4000/4 supersport)

If you want to play with one, fine but don't expect to make money, thats all

I owned most of the big Kwaks then and I own one now, they weren't all that.

Z9/1000s are a different kettle of fish value wise, but they're from the previous era and, truth be told, were even more shit than the 80s bikes.

Anyway, OP hasn't mentioned making money, just learning and having something nice and a bit different at the end of it; if he learns a few skills, does some shopping around and takes his time, I reckon he could get that back on the road for around a grand, assuming the motor is reasonably decent.

For the price of a pretty average 125, that seems like spectacular VFM to me.

As Shaft said I wouldn't be looking to make money it'd just be to learn a bit about bikes, rather play around with that than mess about with mine and be left with nothing to ride! Thumbs Up
