2 Stroke oil, the more expensive the better, castrol TTS is the best, apparantly. Same with gearbox oil, but it's more important that you get the correct type, and coolant er who cares Razz

For 2 stroke oil just use whichever semi synth or fully synth you can get locally and regularly, its best not to change oil type that much.

Fully synth your engine will last longer, but semi synth is about half the price (about £10/litre for full synth and £6/litre for semi). Your engine will last slightly longer on fully synth, but if you budget in the cost of the oil over 10k miles, its probably cheaper overall to use semi.
I wouldn't expect a noticeable performance boost from using fully.

As for gearbox oil, just use 10W40 4 stroke engine oil and change it when the gearchange feels nasty. Theres no need to use special expensive oil here, because the gearbox will only need to last about 30k tops.

Need to drop my gear box oil on my nsr 125 and noticed you say 10 W 40 4 stroke oil, but i'm on a 2 stroke is that still right, went to halfords and found they have 2 stroke gear oil so didnt want to get the wrong one, is 10w40 4 stroke the right one ?

Any help much appreciated

Ian

Yup, 10W40 4 stroke engine oil is the stuff to use in NSR gearboxes. You could use gearbox oil if you want to, but there no need and engine oil is cheaper.

i use castrol tts for 2-stroke oil, can you use castrol R4 in your gearbox? does it really improve acceleration by up to 10%?

I very much doubt it will improve much in an NSR. In something like a tuned r1 it probably will help, but the differences are going to be pretty insignificant in a standard 125. It can also cause clutch slip in some bikes, especially with EBC clutches apprantly.

Just as a side question and poss. another silly question but do bikes / nsr 125's have oil filters ?, or is this why we have to change to oil quite regular ?

Four stroke bikes have oil filters.

NSR125's are two strokes and so they burn their oil along with the fuel. You need to refill the oil once for every few tanks of fuel.

They also have four stroke oil in the gearbox too, which does occasionally need changing. This does not have an oil filter though.
