If you love this album, please explain why you love it so much? Keep seeing this album in the top 5/10 lists of all time and never actually heard it. I'm 28 so too young to have been about when it was released, so decided to get myself a copy and currently listening to it.

Think I will give it a good few listens before I share my opinion.

What are you opinions?

You need to see it, to believe it.

Dont do this. Please dont. The best of Floyd should only be listened to if you are already a fan.

Since Dark Side, most, if not all, of Floyd's albums have been concept and to get the full benefit one should listen to them from start to finish.

The wall is a concept album of epic scope with lots of Roger Water's personal life, history and views in there for good measure. Its the story of a young lad called Pinky who's over protective mother oppressed him, his father died in the war, the schooling was ran by tyranical teachers handy with the cane, all these trauma's were one more "brick" in his inner wall which he ran behind for shelter. Blocked the outside world out, so to speak.

As he grew up Pinky went on to be come a rock star, got married, lived the rock star life of drug use and infidelity, as the story reaches towards the end of part 1 of the album his marriage is in tatters, his drink and drug lifestyle have all taken their toll and he completes his wall and locks himself away from the rest of the world hoping this will cure his issues.

Instead his inner crisis escalates and comes to a head during one concert where he see's himself as a facist dictator. He sets men against fans he considers "unworthy" to be in his audience. Racked with guilt afterwards he places himself on trial with his inner demons, all his bricks, mother, wife, teacher, all come back to haunt him and condem his actions. His inner judge's sentence is to destroy his inner wall and expose his true self to him and the rest of the world.

Sadly the album never tells you what happened to poor Pinky after all that. I'd like to think he made a full recovery from his depression but the album does leave you with the impression that he couldnt take it and Pinky is sadly no longer with us.

The album is very dark. But it is a master class in how concept albums should work. Take 2 hours out of your day, listen to the album and if your interested in knowing more watch the live show Roger has been currently touring with. Its a visual masterpiece.

The dark side of the moon syncs up really well with the wizard of oz.

https://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-76123313707631450

Though i think the best way to listen tot he album is:
Loud
High quality (vinyl)
Dark room
Stoned Laughing

Dark side was recorded in, what was at the time, groundbreaking quadrophonic sound. The ideal place to listen to the album was in the middle of a room with speakers positioned in each corner. Works really well with a good set of headphones though but dont go for the remastered copy. If you can then the vinyl is the best way to listen to the album.

No different from my general view of Pink Floyd: boring, self-indulgent, technically excellent but lacking any 'soul'.

Alan Parker's film version has some excellent animation and a good cast, and at least gives you something to watch whilst you're waiting for (yet another) soaring guitar solo to arrive.

I can live with. Boring I can't.

OT
Would rather listen to Ummagumma, More or Atom Heart Mother if I
had to choose a post Syd record.

Thanks pinky, didn't realise it was telling a story. Will pop it on my headphones later and listen properly. Interesting.

I only listen to Floyd on vinyl. My Parents bought me a USB vinyl player two Christmases ago which allows you to record your vinyls to your computer which is that I have done with all my Floyd records.

I can tell you now that remastered/CDs of Floyd sound nothing like their original vinyl counterparts in my opinion anyway.

Personally? Floyd seems most enjoyable to me when I have my headphones on as they are surround sound, crazy loud and led in bed trying to fall asleep.

But as has been said, listen to everything since Dark Side as a full album from start to finish. In fact my favourite 'concept' album is The Final Cut as you can really feel the narrative and how it changes as you listen to each song. Eventually you'll feel (especially with vinyl) that the songs merge into one and it just becomes 45 solid minutes of auditory heaven.

Cheers. Thumbs Up!

Tried it and didn't like it.

I think its just not the right...mix of guitars to gay ratio Laughing

Didn't hate it, just didn't enjoy as much as other albums from other artists.

I guess I just pick and choose certain songs Thumbs Up

first floyed album I heared was Meddle then saw the wall then listened to Dark side of the moon.

All extreemly fantastic in there own right althoguh I have to say in some parts slightly dated.
Not taking anything from them with that, they were pioneers and to enjoy there tunes it has to be a dark room, lots of drugs or beer if you cant find any drugs and listen to it.
the wall film is ok and works well.

Listen to it then judge for yourself,. its like a trip to alton towers. might get rave reviews but you might think its shite. I know I did,

The 1980/81 Wall concerts were the best gigs I've been to - much better than Roger's current tour.

Animals is my favourite Floyd album though.

Brick in the Wall (part ii) was the first single I ever bought.

However, I prefer the Korn cover (parts i, ii & iii) nowadays.

Heresy, I know.

Used to but I still live and breath Floyd several times a day and dont smoke anymore.

Your one of the minority. Roger turned up with 2 full albums already written and the rest of the band chose The Wall to be released. The other album went on to become Pro's and cons of Hitchiking, Rogers first solo album. The out takes from The Wall became The Final Cut. If you get the newer version of The Final Cut it has an extra track slotted in that featured in the movie of The Wall. When the Tigers Broke Free.

Many Floyd fans dont rate the Final Cut as a good Floyd album because of the above, and the fact it was the album that finally broke what was Rogers Floyd. Rick Wright was kicked out of the band during the editing stages of The Wall and Final Cut album but begged to stay on board as a session musician for the stage shows of The Wall. Tensions came to a head in The Final Cut when Dave and Roger couldnt get on and Dave's name was removed from the band list on the album.

What happened after that will always remain as one of the biggest litigation battles in rock history.

Personally I love The Final Cut. It has some fantastic songs in it where you can really hear Roger straining to contain his emotions.

Yeah I know, songs like Your Possible Pasts/One Of The Few were meant to be on The Wall but as I recall it David Gilmour expressed his distaste to them being included in the album The Final Cut as he thought they weren't good enough for The Wall or The Final Cut. As far as I'm concerned they're fantastic and would haven't have been a good fit for The Wall.

As you said, on The Final Cut there are places in songs which make the hair stand up on the back of my neck and cause me to shiver with amazement every time I listen to them, one springs to mind:

""What happened to the Post-War dream?" Oh Maggie, Maggie what have we done!?"

Fantastic music of which I have yet to hear anything of anywhere near the same calibre. Thumbs Up!
