Well I'm about to be made redundant, although might still be able to get an internal position in another department, but thats another story.
I am seriously thinking about starting up my own business doing various IT and media stuff (repairs, config, consultancy etc). Has anyone else ever tried to do this or got any pearls of wisdom?

It would start of in my spare time around some IT contract positions and dealing with gen public and small businesses, with a hope that it builds up and then I can go full time into it and perhapps develop into something larger (bit of a dream maybe!)

Thanks all.

What do you offer that others don't?
Why should a business trust you with their systems?
How are they going to find out about you?
How will you protect yourself when something goes wrong?
How will you deal with the 90days between invoicing for a job and getting paid? What will you do if they don't pay up?

All important factors to consider.

Indeed they are!

1. That is where I need to do some research, both about what other companies offer and what is expected. Obviously customer service is a big part of this, but also have a couple of ideas that I haven't seen anyone else offering which I will.
2. Businesses would start slow, although I already have a few contacts within local businesses so would be able to build on this reputation.
3. Have quite a few marketing ideas already and will be investigating more (using social media, advertising, leaflet drops etc)
4. That is something I have no idea about, have had a few thoughts, I take it you mean around if I fix something and then it goes wrong further down the line? Or around financials? Will be set up as a ltd company to start off with, so limiting my exposure.
5. As it will be in my spare time to start off with this won't be too much of an issue, I'll also not give all companies the same terms, ie, 30 days from invoice. As to chasing that's where I might get a bit unstuck as I'm sure there are legls involved and costs!

Thanks. Made me think about it and thats what I need!
