Hi guys, I'm 20 and plan to do my DAS this summer or at least a few lessons; I'll be 21 by then.

How much should I be looking at for say, 4 lessons and the DAS to be done.

I have a CBT certificate, a full uk driving license also.

Will I be learning on a 125 or a bigger bike with me being 21? Sure I read somewhere if you're under 21 it has to be a 125, wondering if it's any different being above 21.

I would do my DAS before I turn 21 but I'll be restricted and also I've just booked my holiday to Thailand so out of money for the time being.

Thanks, GF-91

Right. DAS is Direct Access and is designed for anyone over 21 years old. It is, as the name suggests, direct access to a full A license without any 33BHP restrictions. You will not be able to do DAS until you reach 21 years old.

Prices vary between places but you are looking between £75 and £150 per day for DAS + test fee's, that includes bike hire and instruction and will be done on a bike which is 500cc or bigger.

Going though a training school before 21 years old will restrict you to a 125cc bike and you will only be able to do your full test on the 125cc bike. Pass and you will be restricted for 2 years to 33BHP.

Oddly enough the cost for the hire of the 125 and instructor will normally be the same.

In order for you to get the full test though you will need to do the motorcycle Theory before doing mod 1 and 2, regardless of the bike being used. I should get that booked before hand and get it out of the way. Like your CBT it lasts for 2 years.

4 days should be enough to get you ready for the test but it does depend on how fast you learn.

Does that mean I'm learning on a 500? Cause I'll be 21 ?

You Called?
Do you REALLY want to let the genie out the bottle?
I do NOT like intensive DAS courses; you do KNOW that don't you?

If you booked one; and turned up with CBT, then you probably wouldn't have to start out doing CBT at least in part on a 125; you could go straight into DAS training, which is on road, on a 'big-bike'.
Check courses; make sure you know what you are getting for your money.
Does the course include test fees?
Whats the 'deal' if you fail? Particularly Mod 1.
If booked through the school; and as part of the course; will you loose the test fees? Will you have to book a 'full' course to repeat?

You have had bikes OTR in the past; you probably have no 'advantages' over any-one starting from fresh; likewise from holding full car licence. Bad habbits; car driving habbits, can be as hard to break and train out for bike tests as teaching some-one who knows nothing; often harder!

How much training you 'need'? All dependant. How good you ride to start, how fast you learn; how 'lucky' you are on tests.

Personally, still advocate 125 training to put down the foundations cheaply. THAT would be how I'd reccomend you spent the time between now & your birthday; on a tiddler, taking weekly lessons, to dress up for tests. If you then do two days or two half days on a DAS bike for tests; a C90 or 100cc commuter 'would do'. Save expensive rented time on a DAS bike. And get 'ahead' of your birthday, nailing down any erroniouse habbits or points of technique. Could pretty much book the tests, for week of your birthday.

Right now? If you haven't already; get the Theory/Hazard nailed... can be a lottery that one.

Chances are you will spend some time on a 125 before being allowed onto a bigger bike. The training school will need to know your ablities before letting you out on a big bike.

As an aside, while you can't obtain a full A license until you turn 21, I was wondering if your provisional strictly prohibits riding a DAS/large bike while under training. The legislation (RTA 1988 101 (1), MV(DL)R 1996 7 (2)) suggests that you probably can't do it, but it might be worthwhile asking your chosen training school about it. Train first, pass on your birthday. Thumbs Up

This is exactly what I've been told now I've finally booked some DAS training, "come down on Saturday and do a few hours on a 125 first" (they know I've only road a scooter). Also they've recommended I just pay by the hour until they think I'm ready for the test rather than forking out for a 'DAS Course'.
