Had it through the post this morning...
I was on my way to help a friend out, and got flashed by a fixed camera. My fault entirely...

I was just wondering though, what are the chances of being offered a speed awareness course over the points and fine? Do they have a method for selection, or is it random?

Many Thanks

Bad luck mate. At 36 in a 30 you'd be eligible for a course if that particular force offers one. They normally cost about £90 rather than the penalty of £60, but you do without the 3 points. It's determined by how much over the limit you were, if you were somewhere in the mid-40s then you wouldn't be offered it.

It should be within the limits for offering a course, IF your area does them.
I was nicked in North Wales and did the course in Wakefield, and it isn't as bad as you might think.
The important thing is to reply within the 28 days, there's nothing to be gained by delaying your reply if your area offers courses, (essentially they want a bribe to drop the points)

And keep copies of everything, including the envelope the ticket came in.
Get proof of posting when you reply as well. There are lots of cases where they say the reply didn't arrive, (equals £600 + 6 points failure to furnish details charge).

PS.
What area is it?

North Wales Police once again!

It was on the Mold Road in Wrexham, opposite the football ground... I very rarely frequent Wrexham, so I didn't know it was there... Fair's fair though...

Many Thanks

Keen in North Wales aren't they, 34 in a 30 (safety van Evil or Very Mad ) cost me a morning on the course and £60 (but no points).
They should offer a course (if you're worried about the points, it's a good option). But bear in mind they are under no obligation to offer it.
Might be worth actually asking them rather than wait and see.
Whatever happens though, don't forget to reply to the original ticket within 28 days.

They aren't but if they do it any other way the scamera partnerships don't get a cut of the profits. As you said, it is merely the scamera partnerships demanding a bribe to avoid taking you through the legal process.

All the best

Indeed, I've never heard anybody showing much love towards North Wales Police!

Yeah, it's the points I'm trying to avoid. I currently have a clean licence, so would be nice to keep it that way...

Guess I'll fill in the form, and see what their response is...

Thanks again

I've said it before and I will no doubt end up saying it again after this but I firmly believe that North Wales Police get a bad rep.

I lived there for 10 years, 6 of those with a bike license and I'd ride my bike almost every single day as I lived in the hills and had no other way of getting around. In that time I was pulled over 3 times. Once was for a standard procedure breath test over the Christmas period which went fine and they were very polite. Another time I was pulled by a traffic officer who only wanted to tell me my rear light had blown and that I should probably change it. The third time was for something rather naughty that would have ended up in a ban probably but once again by being polite the copper let me off with a lecture.

The problem from what I've seen first hand is that bikers from all over the UK descend on the Welsh roads which are some of the best in the UK, ride like idiots on their bikes with illegal cans, small number plates and illegal level tints on their visors and then moan about being the victim. You know the law, regardless of how trivial you may think it is, so don't moan when you break it (not aimed at the OP by the way!) and get caught.

The whole time I was living in Wales I had a legal plate, visor and exhaust, didn't go to the Horseshoe Pass or Betws-y-Coed on a Sunday afternoon and was left well alone despite some hooning every now and again.

I'm well aware that they have used underhand tactics such as disguising cameras vans as horse boxes in fields and using coppers on unmarked bikes to goad you into riding faster and I'm in no way saying they're a force of angels by any stretch of the imagination. I'm also under no illusion that there will have been plenty of cases where coppers may have just been on a mission to prosecute with a vendetta against bikes but maybe I was just lucky. My point is if you attract attention to yourself then don't moan when the attention you get is not what you wanted!
