Got this from another forum I use

Quote:
Not sure if these will effect anyone here (it would had Justin), but there are some nasty new rules coming for sellers.

For anyone who is currently a Top Rated Seller and enjoying a 20% discount on fees, to keep TRS status, going forward, you will have to have tracking on 90% of your items shipped. Tracking will have to be uploaded within one day of sale (in other words you have to ship all items within one day of sale) and you will have to offer a minimum 14 day return policy. This is regardless of item size or cost. If you don't do all these things, you don't get the 20% discount anymore, though you will keep your TRS badge, assuming your ratings are good enough to qualify of course. The above rules apply to sales to US based buyers only. If you ship internationally, you do not have to have tracking.

Pictures will have to be a minimum of 500 pixels along the longest edge and cannot have any text on them, save a watermark. For many sellers, this will mean re-taking hundreds if not thousands of pictures. (Don't think the diecast sweat shops are going to like this one).

There is a new return policy coming. For now it is optional but will most likely be mandatory, for at least top rated sellers if not all sellers. That policy is: the buyer who wishes to return an item no longer needs to open a case or even contact the seller. All the buyer has to do is click on 'return item' in their purchase history section. Ebay will automatically bill the seller for the return shipping charges. This is currently being done on eBay, for those sellers who have opted into the program...it's a beta test of some kind, for now. It means buyers can now basically rent things for free and return them after use for a full refund of all monies paid and at no cost to them. Slick. You may be asking yourself: "I wonder if this applies to DVDs, clothes etc." Yes it does!!!Who needs NetFlix, when you can do that cheaper on eBay!

The cap on Final Value Fees on higher priced items has been raised from $100 to $250.

eBay is now trying to discourage direct communication between buyer and seller. They are offering automatic 5 stars on the communication DSR rating if you DON'T contact the buyer, but ship within one day and offer a 14 day return policy. I guess they are trying to get rid of off eBay dealings that are happening. I imagine eventually it will be very difficult for buyers and sellers to directly communicate.

These changes are being phased in over the late spring, summer and early fall.

Not so happy selling!!!

Thumbs Down

If that's true, ebay have just pissed all over the people who earn them the most money.

Reminds me of a certain diet company who my mum and sister worked for self employed and were among the top earners in the country. They got stung with a huge tax bill and instead of taking a hit, they passed it on to all their top earners on top discount.

Corporate cock sucking cunts springs to mind.

So, hypothetically, as I am not top rated, I would have to send my items out within 1 day of purchase? Now does that mean payment or does that mean sale?

Thats not clear enough. Someone could buy something and not pay for a few days. Would I lose my TRS status because someone was late in paying? Or would I have to ship out the item before they have paid to keep my TRS?

Not clear enough. I would wait for Ebay to contact you direct with the information.

Eh, eBay is online evolution in action, full of predators and prey all trying to do each other over.

That returns policy shouldn't really effect us much over here, since it's essentially implementing the Distance Selling Regulations that already exist in the UK and which the vast majority of sellers don't know about or try to ignore or deny.

I've never, ever bought anything via eBay which complies with the requirement to document the returns policy properly, which essentially means that (if push comes to shove) I get to decide the means of return, which could be "Send your courier to pick it up at my convenience, or don't, but either way, refund now."

The TSR program is a tar baby for sellers. I buy a fair amount of low value stuff, and have no hesitation in giving negatives where appropriate - call me old fashioned, but I still consider feedback to be for the benefit of other buyers, not a tool to blackmail sellers with.

Consequently, I've had email and phone begging, pleading and even (risible) threats of legal action over negative ratings that I've given to TRS accounts. Not the merest fraction of a fuck is ever given, you lie or ship garbage, you get a rating that says so.

Yes, I know, buyers go with the lowest price, and how-oh-how is an honest seller to compete with the crooks and liars without cutting a few corners or spinning a few tales, all the usual excuses. Maybe there are just too many sellers on eBay as it is, and not everybody who wants to can make a living out of it.

This is why I use Gumtree Thumbs Up Listed my old pedal bike on there earlier this week, within 20 minutes had a buyer and he picked it up the next day cash in hand. Ebay is still good for buying things mind, but selling, no thanks.

No text in photos, does that mean if you sell a book you need to blank out any words on the cover?

True about eBay but Gumtree is a festering hole of scammers, chancers and stolen goods.

The scammers certainly came out when I listed my laptop but so far I've had good experiences. Also get people trying to swap you their cat and a fiver for your bike, but you get those tools on ebay as well. If I had to use ebay for some reason what I'd do is hope I found a buyer before the auction ended and just cancel all the bids and end it manually - that way you only pay the listing fees.

You;d think with eBay shoving their cocks up all their users arses a decent alternative would have surfaced by now - does anyone ever use the alternatives currently on offer?

"It's for Americans.." - not if it works, they'll have it global within days.

I'd rather quit using ebay than bow to those rules, so if I sell something and the buyer has a power cut meaning he can't pay for 3 days, the TRS he's bought from doesn't get the benefits? Fuck that.

They might just be knocking the final nails in the coffin, will be interesting to watch this unfold - the trouble is, they've monopolised that industry and are a law unto themselves.

I've met the Director of Ebay Motors/Gumtree (in passing, chatted with him on the way to a meeting) and he seemed just like my old boss, a sound guy when he was being himself but the minute there was a quick buck to be made that was the priority, loyalty and customer focus meant nothing.

Ebay is already unreasonable if you are a seller selling something other than extremely low value goods from China.

Actually yes I was just about to start on this,

I've listed some parts today and discovered what a total fucking con it is.

I wanted to list shit as buy it now so that it could be bought, I send Monday, quick cash and ratings, job done.

Oh noes.... to have a buy it now you need a starting price, which has to be less than the buy it now price so undervalues it AND you then have two different list prices so they charge you accordingly.

40-fucking-pence for a 'starting price' ontop of a buy it now - which you can't avoid paying.

Wankers.

EDIT - is it just me, or how condescending is this?:

Congratulations. You did it again—your item is listed for sale.

The biggest killer is 10% bloody commission they take at the end, for me for example the wholesaler gives roughly 20% off retail so add paypal and eBay fees and that leaves me with f**k all

Hopefully a decent alternative will arrive soon....which will eventually go down the same route too Laughing

eBay can be ok for buying stuff though

I stopped selling there 2 years ago. I use Amazon to sell most stuff which probably makes me less money, but I get less hassle.

I think you'd need an already existing mega company to compete with ebay, I can't see something starting from fresh and going head to head. Amazon for example, they have a nice little setup so I can't see them creating an ebay alternative but if they did I imagine it would be fully populated within a week.

There's another smaller version of ebay called ebid which I think may be second to ebay (which makes it sound big) but have a look at any of the categories they look completely empty. If they did reach the heights of ebay I wonder if their cheap fees would remain the same....?

I used to work for a retailer of italian made goods, which are still poorly counterfeited and sold on ebay at one third of the RRP.

We actively sought out every chinese listing on ebay and reported them as counterfeit, ebay did nothing, the feedback these people had was littered with negative saying the items were counterfeit, ebay did nothing, the owner of the parent company complained to ebay, they did nothing, we opened ebay accounts and bought all their goods, and used the opportunity to leave negative feedback without paying for the goods and ebay removed the feedback!

the counterfeiters were also contacting the 2nd, 3rd 4th and 5th etc highest bidders and making second chance offers as they were making a fortune out of the cheaply made counterfeits!

I lost interest in ebay when it stopped being an auction site. I got fed up of typing an item into the search and seeing 1,746 items, of which 43 were auctions, which means I have to pay whatever someone wanted for an item (i.e, a price that makes them a profit) whereas in the old days, ebay was full of people who were happy to get a couple of quid in return for off-loading some clutter onto someone who wanted it.

It's just one big classifieds section now, with loads of knock-off goods and dodgy amateur businesses.

I now go car-booting every weekend, but even car-boot sales aren't what they used to be 10 years ago. I've noticed a huge increase in the number of vans at car-boot sales with the same faces at the stall and the same dodgy knock-off goods or factory seconds and no willingness to haggle... Surely regular traders like these with a proper stock of goods should be at a market rather than a car-boot sale. Mind you, it's still 20times better than ebay as there are still a good few people there who have cleared the loft out and are selling stuff for an extra bit of pocket money. I managed to get 3 decent films, tony hawk's american wasteland (ps2) and a pilsner urquell glass for less than 2 quid for the lot. All the DVDs and the game work brilliantly too.

Pilsner Urquell glasses? I can lay my hands on a very large ongoing quantity of those. Peroni as well.

It's this glass:

For 20p it allows me to drink a bottle of my favourite pilsner and reminisce about being in prague.

Reason I used to visit booters was for this exact point, but they got crap a couple of years ago.

I was talking to an old trader recently who told me Leeds' main one hasn't been operating for about 5 years now, because it became over-run with various tribes selling tatty clothing and 'designer(knock off)' fashion wears - became full of too many unofficial businesses to then cater for real 'booters.

Biggest one I know of round these parts is Rufforth but that's all traders now and you have to hope there's a few proper carbooters outside to actually get a chance of some real buys. I haven't been there in about 2 years and it probably only costs me about £1-2 in fuel.
- that said, the now £1.50 entrance fee is ridiculous; he's never once resurfaced the land of the car park despite being a millionaire. I swear there's bigger potholes there than craters in the moon. Thumbs Down

EDIT - back ontopic with Ebay, I left a seller negative feedback for being a dick on Friday but having checked my own now he's left positive for me since I did pay straight away and it wasn't a bad transaction. If the product had been rightly advertised there wouldn't have been an issue. Credit to him for that.
