The answer to your question is as follows:

Most insurers don’t require an MOT to insure the bike, only can think of one at the moment Endsleigh Insurance Services however they will still place the bike on cover but should you have an accident and the bike then they will have the bike inspected to make sure that it wasn’t as a result of the incident, but I wouldn’t worry about this.

You can ride the bike to the MOT test centre (given that its booked in) and you can ride the bike home again, and so on for any retests that may be needed. However you cannot ride the bike in any other circumstance.

So what you need to do is get quotes for you bike and get it insured, if you go on to biketrader.co.uk they have a list of bike insurers etc.

Once the bike is insured you need to book the bike in for its MOT (you'll need to take the Insurance cover note, or certificate), given the bike passes then you can go and get your tax sorted, you will need the insurance certificate and the MOT.

All a bit drawn out but you need to:

1. Insure the bike
2. Mot the bike
3. Tax the bike.

Hope this was of help if you have any questions feel free to mail me.
Very Happy Very Happy

Basically nobody would know if it wasn't MOT'd unless you were involved in an accident. My gf's dad didn't get paid out when his VFR found a telegraph post in the Yorkshire Dlaes as his MOT was one day out!

If I booked it in for MOT, would it be safe to ride directly there (without tax), MOT it (will definitely pass), then ride home ?

This is perfectly legal (although you can still be done for anything illegal on the bike, such as a bald tyre), but the MOT must be pre booked, and must be recorded in the MOT stations bookings sheet. In other words just make sure that they write down your registration, etc, and don't just say "yes, bring it in".

All the best

You can also ride to and from a place of repair, but it is unclear as to whether your mates garage counts. I called up my local police station and they said they weren't 100% sure but they though it was ok.
