Hi all

Passed my A2 restricted test last Friday! Very Happy

I basically just use my YBR125 for commuting to work and back - about 140 miles a week on a mix of roads. Anyway I want to move up to a bigger bike with more road presence, more grin factor etc and have been considering a CBF500.

Suppose my question is will the running costs of a bigger bike be massively different over my little 125?

I've even looked at a CBF250 and like the look......

Cheers in advance.....

While I can;t to a proper comparison between a ybr 125 and a cbf 500 I have owned Both

I moved up from a ybr when my commute became 40miles a day.

The tank range on the honda is around 200 miles to including researve, if i remember correctly its about the same if not slightly more than I got from my YBR

The YBR got 70+ MPG
The Honda gets around 60 on my commute which is a mix of lanes, A roads and a little town riding.

The cbf500 is a very good bike to have restricted as it copes with it very its a only a throttle stop and alows the bike to rev freely.
I have ridden a 08 650 Bandit which felt a little breathless in comparison.

the honda is also a very easy bike to maneuvre i'm only 5"4 ish with 28" leg hight and can manage it fine.

with regards to the cbf250 I have also had the experience of ridding one and while it was a hire bike, the built and ride quality was a lot worse than the 500 and you will find that they are quite expensive in comparision bigger bikes and may lose a lot of their value in 2013 when the rules change.

Hope this helps as you have probably gathered I really rate the cbf 500 for a restricted big bike and if I can be of any more help then don't hesitate to ask.

Yes, but that doesn't mean it will be mega expensive, just that running a 125 is very cheap!
125cc = Roughly 100mpg?
500~600cc = Roughly 45~55mpg?

I get about 45mpg from my 600 on a normal ride, but then I've also had much higher mpg out of it.

Insurance isn't too bad on the bigger bike either, but that depends where you live / how long you've been riding etc.

Don't forget about tax either;
Upto 150cc £16
151~400cc £35
401~600cc £53
Over 601cc £74

Consumables on a big bike are more too. £200 for a set of tyres, £110~ish for C&S etc.

Cheers, thanks for the info.......

I think the CBF500 will be the way to go. After all, I think the pros of more power, road presence and dare i say fun? will out weigh the cons (if you can call them that) of higher running costs etc.

The CBF250 is coming in too high a price compared with the 500 and seems pointless because this.

Thanks for the advice, much appreciated! Wink

Yeah, it'll be much nicer than a 125. Don't have to rag the tits off it to hold a steady 70~80mph.

Should still be very reasonable to run and alot cheaper than a car!

CB500 will feel SO fast compared to your YBR that you really won't give two shits about the running costs.

I remember jumping off my TZR125 onto a GPZ400 and being utterly gobsmacked by the acceleration of the thing. These days though my ZX6R feels frustratingly slow at times Laughing

Actually, there's an idea...GPZ500S? Cheaper and arguably sportier than a CBF500, very economical, useful fairing and they're actually pretty quick for what they are...

I hate it when people can just sit on any old bike, I'm 6"7 and most sports bikes are too small for me. Sad

As already said, you will not give a flying fuck about the running cost once you get out on the road Laughing

I'd almost liken going from a 125 to a full power 600cc sports bike to dropping my first tablet, very cool feeling.

Not too keen on the look of the GPZ though, I'll keep them peeled for a CBF 500........

I'm unsure why you're so set on the CBF, however they are good bikes. I'd definitely have one over a GS500 or ER5. I wouldn't rule out an older CB500 though if it is well looked after, they are basically the same bike.

If you are anywhere near Southampton, the local school is selling all their 500s to get 600s (new test rules Sick). Although I know the bikes to be well maintained, I would have a good test ride to check the gearbox/clutch hasn't been killed by learner abuse.
