Hi Guys,

I'm trying to fit some replacement headers to my CBR, I bought some new exhaust gaskets from my local Honda place so that the system would be air tight, with the new gaskets in place the nuts barely fit on the studs and I'm having to use lots of force to tighten them down.

The new gaskets were around 2mm thick which now they are on there it seems way too thick to tighten down fully. Should they be this thick and should I need to put that much force through them? I don't want to round off a nut or anything.

Thanks

Conan

They should be tight and minimal force should be needed to tighten headers (A lot less than you think). Have you removed the old gaskets? When I took the exhaust off of my RXS they were 2 gaskets! The Gaskets should crush up.

Couldn't see any old gaskets, maybe I missed something Confused

I'll pop the headers off and have another look. At the moment it is taking two hands on a breaker bar to turn them at all, not comfortable with using that much force, the last thing I want is a broken stud!

I replaced my headers yesterday, the nuts are listed as being done up to 10Nm, so not very tight.

Like Chris says, make sure the old gaskets are out - they're sometimes not easy to spot. Use a very small screwdriver to have a pick at them.

You should be able to see the collars bending before the studs brake

1/3 the old gaskets are still there, 4/1 there are 2 sets Laughing

When I did mine up I used a 1/4 ratchet and minimal force. i.e 1 finger. As Joe said have a dig around it a screw driver and shine a torch in there the gasket compacts down and will be fairly hard to distinguish from the head, yank them out with a pair of needle nosed pliers, this can be taxing getting them out.

On my CBR the gaskets got covered in soot and you couldn't see them, but they were there. Have a look again, have a feel around the exhaust port you might feel a lip.

Got em!

Exhaust is fitted nicely.

Just realised I have a screw in the back tyre though, right in time for everywhere to shut!
