Watched Donnie Darko at the weekend, what was it about?

As far as I can tell,a boy put off being killed to put right a load of wrongs in his town, then go back in time to die when he was supposed to.....?

Did I miss something or was it really a load of crap?!

It's not a load of crap.

There are a lot of in depth meanings, just you're to shallow to notice them. Razz

Do a google for "donnie darko explanation".

You really need to do some background reading to understand the film, a phamphlet/book called "Philosophy of Time Travel" will explain it.

I was rather drunk when I watched it, but I remember I liked it, though obviously I didn't draw any conclusions about what it meant as I was busy laughing at the giant rabbit Laughing

Will google it and have a read, nothing better to do Wink

Yeah I thought it was good. Kept me occupied anyway, I usually get bored if a film isn't that good. About to watch Daredevil again as I watched it when I was very very stoned a while ago, so I want to see if it's actually as shit as I remember. Confused

Donnie Darko is a wicked film,

Mulholland Drive, now theres a weird film. The point of the film apparently is that there isnt a point, which is a bit of a paradox!?

Do not dis Donnie Darko. It's one great film and yes it is slightly confusing when you first watch it, but it takes about 3 viewings plus the DVD extras to finally understand what the hell is going on. It's one hell of a story that is worth all your attention.

Also I don't know how many of you have watch The Butterfly Effect, but that seems to be better than your run of the mill film too.

Extra scenes that were cut off because they gave too much away (also were too long) and the director/producer (can't remember who) explaining through the scenes. It brings a lot of light to the story and makes you understand. Not usually into extras and whatnot because I think they're a load of crap, but the ones for Donnie Darko were worth it.

PostPosted: 12:23 - 06 Apr 2004    Post subject: Explanation - or not actually! Reply with quote

Confused After watching it i thought the entire experience is an attempt by Frank to save his own life. He uses the time portals to visit Donnie in the past and gradually coerce him into remaining in his room on the night when the jet engine falls through the house, and he uses Donnie's schizophrenia as a tool to accomplish this. Whenever you have a time travel movie, there's a paradox. Given my explanation, the paradox is when does Frank realize he's going to die so he can take advantage of the portals to change the past. Then, of course, as with any time travel story, does changing the past change the future etc. Then it all gets messed up - que Films like the Terminator (which i will forgive the flaws because it is simply brilliant) and they fall into the 'artistic license' anyway.

However - Kelly (the author) states in the commentary that 1) There is a parallel universe. 2) Donnie is a superhero. He feels it is all really obvious. I feel he is so immersed in it that he lost us, well me anyhow.

The big point I missed from Kelly's commentary was his overall explanation of the story, and I think it was because he didn't have one. I wanted to know why the jet engine crossed from one universe to the other, and why Frank was leading Donnie on his journey. Kelly didn't have any explanations for this, and he admitted he didn't know why Donnie returned to his room. The incoherent ending didn't ruin the film, but it did rob it of the emotional impact that it should have had.

The one thing I needed to know to have emotional closure in this film was Donnie's motivation for sacrificing his life. If he did it to save the lives of Frank and Gretchen, then it would be moving. Thought the Tears for Fears song at the end is quite haunting...

So generally - if you are looking for a conclusion on this film - good luck! It seems the author got so lost in it he even lost the plot.

I still like it in some strange way though!

Okay for starters Donnie really didn't suffer from schizophrenia. In one of the extra scene's Kelly shows how Donnie's psychiatrist doesn't believe there is actually anything wrong with him and how she's been giving him dud pills all along.

Secondly what causes him to go back in time isn't to save his Mother, his sister or Frank. It's to save Gretching. It was the sight of seeing her dead that caused him to realise that he could indeed control time, change the predestined paths that god had set forth (that's what those liquid like trails are) and bring back the life he robbed from her. Why else would he have taken her body with him in the car to be used as a vessel to travel through time?

Thirdly, again taken from the extra scenes, Frank is not acting in a selfish way trying to get Donnie to go back in order to save his life, Frank is in fact God. A higher being educating him in the actual mysteries that lay within the Universe like he did with Roberta Sparrow. See there is a reason why Roberta Sparrow walks back and forth like lunatic to her mail box. She's travelled through time and knows that she will receive a letter from Donnie (the one he writes at the end).

Anyways, I won't go on. There's a hell of a lot more to this story, but it's really long.

Watched it a good 6-7 months ago.
This was because i told a friend i was interested in strange thinking films as such where you come up with explanations.

He then said, you'll enjoy Donnie Darko then, said it was one of the best films he'd seen in a while but wasn't advertised to well.

Got to admit he was write, i spent a good week after watching the fim watching it a 2nd time and reading up alot of peoples views.

BHut half the fun is making up your own and then comparing.

I enjoy films like this.
I have also just downloaded i mean got cinema tickets for the butterfly effect. i will watch tonight and give a concluesion!
