I was stopped behind some traffic at a roundabout today, and I could see sone commotion. Accident I guessed Rolling Eyes So I leaned over a bit and I could see a blue helmet on the ground Confused So I filtered through the traffic to see if I could help.As I got to the front I could see around 6 people around this poor geezer who was lying on the road.

This accident must have just occurred. So these people have already removed the guys helmet Tut Tut and are trying to lift the guy onto his feet. FFS the guy just got knocked off his bike and they are trying to get him to his feet so they can move him a good 20 yards to the side of the road, just so he is out of the way of the traffic Evil or Very Mad The traffic will bloody well just have to drive round him I'm afraid Mad The bloke could hardly stand up on his own.

I wasn't going to get off my bike because you know what it's like when an accident happens everyone and their granny going to help with people just getting in the way.

But I saw these two blokes trying to shift his bike and not having much joy, mainly cause it was in gear Rolling Eyes. So I parked up, ran over and took the thing off them. I'm trying to push the bike to the side of the roundabout and these blokes are hanging off it trying to steer the bike from the grabrail. They wouldn't take the hint, so I had to tell them to sod off eventually.

Anyway, I went to see how the guy was. Someone was phoning an ambulance and asked him his name and stuff. He didn't seem too sure Confused So I asked him if he was alright and he seemed to think so. But he was visibly shaken. I had to tell him to have a sit down and stop being a hero. He was just interested in his bike though Smile

He told me what happened. It is one of those roundabouts with traffic lights on it everywhere. So he said the light went to green he just glanced round and saw it was safe to go and he went. Next thing he knows some woman in a Ford Ka comes through the red light and takes him out from the side Evil or Very Mad

I think these types of roundabouts are a disaster waiting to happen. People go round them and forget about the lights and just treat it like an ordinary roundabout. This particular one is super busy(you need to see it to believe it) and I see people running lights all the time there Mad

Anyway, I'm sure the guy will be fine. Bloody shame though, I felt real sorry for him because he was just a learner and it will probably knock his confidence for six. Sad

Just thought I'd post this as a wee reminder to be careful out there. Thumbs Up Wink

Did the Ford Ka that knocked him off stop?

I think I should get one of those "Do not remove helmet" stickers for my lid.

is it really a co-incidence that all the bad experiences i've had with car drivers have been women? sorry ladies, but I really can't believe the adverts that say women are safer drivers.. thats pure bull****. I'm not about to say women are worse drivers than men since I've seen guys drive badly, just so happens i've had worse experiences with women.. but for women to be so presumptuous and arrogant as to say they're better...?! Rolling Eyes Middle Finger

And those roundabouts.. they defeat the whole object of a roundabout, which is to keep traffic flowing! The americans have enough experience in stop/start traffic... use an american style junction for traffic lights, and a proper roundabout where you want to keep traffic moving!

I think these types of roundabouts arise from the fact that it was once an existing low use roundabout. Now they have built a shopping centre, retail park and an Ikea amongst other things near it, and it is now exceeding its safe limit for volume of traffic. Hence the lights

I go round a roundabout with about 7 sets of lights on it on the way to School (well, 6th Form).

They can be a disaster, as the person who crashed illustrated. However, if you always look towards the traffic at the other set of lights before moving off, you will be fine. I have seen bikes and cars nearly hit, on numerous occasions I am sure I would have been hit square on if I hadn't looked. It's not a big deal if there's a car or bike that's jumped the lights, just wait until it passes and move off.

So, to conclude, assume the traffic lights mean nothing, always look as you normally would at a junction!

Tell ya what, I hate it when don't give a s*** and just do things to try and get on their way as fast as possible, no-matter what the consiquences. Good thing bikers help each other out. I don't know if this is already in place but there are some questions in the highway code on accidents and what you should do, so is there anything about helmet (non)removal? If not, there should be. Anyway good on ya Blue Thumbs Up .

By the way, is anyone else's spell check not working, or is it just mine???

The spell checker doesn't work when you have a url for some reason.

Shame no one has fixed it yet. Brick Wall Razz

Oh, I did have a 'Do not remove helmet' sticker on my old helmet, but when I crashed in that helmet half of BCF was there. Laughing

They used to run information adverts on TV telling people to leave a biker's helmet well alone... Think they obviously need to start running them again. What with the 'Think Bike' ads (now you see him... now you see him) they should really extend it to make people aware to leave it alone.

But then, common sense seems lacking in many people, what with the whole 'should not move a person after an accident at all'... Just makes me hope that if I have an accident, that someone with two braincells to rub together is the first person on the scene Wink

I wish I got there sooner, I wouldn't have let them take his helmet off let alone move him. Rolling Eyes In all fairness to them I wouldn't expect them to know not to take his helmet off, but I CAN NOT believe that they moved him! Shocked Honestly they had him under the arms and were lifting him up onto his feet. Fucking idiots! Evil or Very Mad The poor guys legs were giving way. You know what it's like your legs are like jelly after you come off.

This is when I thought I better get involved. But by the time I moved my bike somewhere safe and ran over it was too late, they had already dragged him over to the side of the road. Surely to god everyone must know that you must never move someone that has been involved in an accident. Particularly a bike accident.

Then when I got over to see the guy was alright, they had left him standing there himself whilst one was phoning an ambulance and the others were gabbing. I would think that sitting the guy down and maybe keeping him warm etc would have been better, he was obviously in a bit of shock ( he got his age wrong by 4 years at first)

Some people are just plain stupid. Although they probably did think they were helping him. Confused Nice one for stopping and helping though. Thumbs Up

I'm going to have to get one of those stickers too, as I live in the Valleys and the level of intelligence around here isn't too high. Rolling Eyes

A few years ago I witnessed a guy getting cut up by a people-carrier of some sort on a roundabout - its a large roundabout with about seven exits (its the one at the end of the Sheffield Parkway, for those who know Sheffield).

Anyway, didn't actually see the guy fall off, but I saw about half a dozen vehicles swerving across lanes, then all of a sudden it was right in front of me. I stopped my car about 6 feet away from him to keep the traffic from squashing the guy. Before I could get out of the car, he got up and was just trying to pick up his bike (a 1977 Triumph), when the petrol leaking out of the tank reached the hot bulb via the cracked headlight cover, or touched the hot exhaust or something. We'll never know - the whole thing burst into flames. He dropped the bike and legged it. I'd only had my car for a few weeks, so my attentions now turned to saving that!

I was half out of the car, so I jumped back in, started the engine and jammed it into reverse-- just as I noticed some silly bitch had stopped right on my back bumper and I couldn't actually go anywhere except forwards (where the burning bike was). I drove around the bike, missing it by inches, and went over to the grass verge where the guy was now sitting. He seemed OK but not too chuffed about losing his bike.

There was me and some guy in a Vectra that stopped to assist. The driver who actually caused the accident was nowhere to be found, and none of us could give a registration number for his vehicle either. Me and vectra guy didn't see who caused it. The biker's mind was obviously not focused on getting number plates when sitting on his arse in the middle of a 4-lane roundabout. Confused

The trouble with big roundabouts like this one is, no fucker knows which lane they're supposed to be in, so they change lanes at the last minute, without using indicators and apparently without checking mirrors either. And accidents like this happen as a result.

I know one thing, I'm not looking forwards to my first crash. It's almost inevitable, I will crash at some point. Just hope I get prepared enough to deal with it when it happens. It doesn't affect my will to ride though and I'm not afraid to have fun on my bike. I just ride within my limits and I've been OK so far. Thumbs Up Wink

Don't I know it. This particular roundabout is just nuts. It winds me up just thinking about it. Even going round it in my car is dangerous enough. There is on bit on it where you join the roundabout coming from the motorway and everyone cuts into the wrong lane al the bloody time. It gets right on my tits!. I always try to get in front of the car besides me just to make sure they can see me, forcing them to use the correct lane. Then they have the cheek to blast their horn at me! Evil or Very Mad The joke is though. it's one of those round abouts that have the dashed lines on the road to follow what lane you should be in. HOW can you go wrong? Confused
