I'm interested in participating in some offroad riding, or quad bike riding etc, something like yamaha offer in it's school. Does anyone have any experience of this or know the best venues (pre in South/East)?

I'm not an offroad rider so it's for laughs.

I did the Yamaha off road experience. https://www.yamaha-schools.co.uk/ a few years ago with a load of people from another bike forum and it was one of the best days I've ever had on two-wheels.

The venue I did it at was the Golding Barn Raceway in Sussex, and I can't recommend it enough. Smile

Your Off Road Experience will start at 10.00am with signing on, followed by a short safety briefing and introduction. After this you’ll receive some basic off road riding instruction and assessment, and then be taken out to the course to build and develop your skills and confidence in a hands-on situation. You’re then given the chance to have a go on all the different types of off road bikes we have from the flagship YZ250F known for its exceptional handling, to the beefy WR250F Yamaha Enduro. After a short break for lunch your day will continue until approximately 3.30/4.00pm.

Although they do seem to not have the WR400's I nearly shat myself on anymore. Shocked

I have heard recommendations about the Yamaha day at Golding Barn too, I'm hoping to head that way myself this year and improve my (non-existant) off roading skills Smile

Seems a little pricy until you remember that they lend you everything and you hand back a muddy bike at the end of it, well worth the price along not to have to scrabble around picking mud and stones out of everywhere!

Mick extance. It's in Wales. Im going for my 2nd time it's great. They teach you all the basics and it's a full days riding deep in woodlands and valleys. They really let you GO FOR IT. Brand new Honda 250's. Good laugh and every one is on there own level of riding.
Cheaper to book through red letter days than through their website.

second this. Me and chris-red did this. Was really good fun. I think we were on the 250s but they did have a 400 they let some one go out on. I was happy with the 250 though. Especially as i had little to no riding experience at the time.

I really want to do one of these. Thumbs Up

I figure £200 ish to find out if I like off-roading, on someone elses bike, with a bit of tuition is better than £500 odd for my own bike, try (and probably fail) to work things out for myself, then decide that I actually dont like it.

Just got to add it to the list of stuff I have planned this summer BikeSafe course, tour of Highlands, holiday in USA) Very Happy

So was I after I tried the 400. It's the only bike I've ever 'power wheelied'. And that's only because I landed it poorly and wound up hanging off the back unable to close the throttle because of the weight transfer. Took me what felt like hours to grapple my way back forwards to the tipping point. Shocked Embarassed

To put in perspective how good the people running the course were when I did it, there was one bloke who turned up having been bought a red letter day voucher as a present from his wife. He'd never actually ridden a bike before, but with a little extra tuition, by the end of the day he was clearing the table-top on the start/finish! Shocked

Closed course proper off-roading is good fun and can be cheap.A friend did the Cambrian Enduro with us on his old Yamaha XT250 and although it was not as quick as our pukka enduro bikes he did have fun.

Unfortunately he blew it up on the furthest part of the 50 mile lap while participating in a special stage Crying or Very sad
